Before taking your placement tests, please review all the ways to receive placement levels without testing and submit documents below
Placement Document Submission Form
Placement testing is available at LCC's Downtown Campus, West Campus, East Campus and the Livingston County Center in Howell (see hours and location info below). No appointment is necessary for on-campus placement tests. A picture ID is required to test.
LCC uses the Accuplacer Reading Test and WritePlacer Essay. Math has three potential tests, review the one that reflects your highest previously learned concepts (if you know the math course you plan to take, check the required test and score here.) ESOL placement is based on ESL Reading, Language Usage, and Listening tests (not Sentence Meaning).
If you are unable to test on campus, or have any questions, please contact Testing Services at 517-267-5500 or lcc-testing-services@lcc.edu.
Do You Need to Test?
You may be able to waive the placement tests if you have any of the following:
- High school transcript through at least the first half of your senior year, within the previous 10 years
- SAT, PSAT (if you have not yet taken the SAT), ACT, AP, CLEP, or ASVAB tests
- GED scores within the previous 3 years
- Completed college-level courses
General Information and Sample Questions
Many courses at LCC have minimum skill level requirements in reading, writing, and/or mathematics. These skill levels must be met before a student will be permitted to enroll in those courses. One way students meet these skill prerequisites is by achieving the required scores on placement tests. Placement test results also play a large role in determining both the level and number of required courses. It is important that you do your best.
If you are below the skill level required for a course, you can retest (you are allowed two test attempts per test per year) or take a course to increase your placement level or meet a prerequisite/co-requisite. Regardless of your placement after testing, you should meet with an LCC academic advisor to plan your course schedule.
All tests are untimed. The WritePlacer test is an essay, while the Reading, Math and ESL tests are multiple choice. For math, if you are unsure of the test or level that you need, focus mostly on the test that represents the highest level of previously learned material. An on-screen calculator is available during the math test. LCC does not use the Accuplacer Writing (multiple choice) or ESL Sentence Meaning tests.
You are encouraged to use the review materials listed below-both to refresh your knowledge and to become familiar with the question format.
