Overview

This degree is designed for students who intend to transfer to a four-year college or university to pursue a baccalaureate degree in this subject area.  Students completing this curriculum will also satisfy the Michigan Transfer Agreement (MTA) between two-year and four-year institutions in Michigan and qualify for an LCC Transfer Studies Certificate of Achievement (1482). Transfer students are strongly encouraged to apply for this certificate along with their degree, as it clearly announces to four-year colleges and universities that the student has successfully completed the MTA. General education and subject area requirements may vary from one college or university to another.

Overview

The Biological Laboratory Techniques certificate is a laboratory-intensive curriculum which emphasizes the wide-ranging applications of DNA Science. Graduates may be able to work in many areas of biotechnology, such as human genetic disease research, improvement of disease-resistance in plants, enhanced crop production, pharmaceutical research, biological cleanup of environmental pollution, forensic science, or genome sequencing projects. This certificate program is designed for students interested in molecular biology, biochemistry, genetics, biotechnology, and forensic technologies, and can be used to supplement and strengthen S.T.E.M. laboratory skills in other degree programs. Students planning to transfer should see an academic or program advisor before enrolling in any course.

Overview

Did you know that LCC has one of the oldest Biotechnology Programs in the country? It was established in 1987 and student learn about industry standard, cutting edge skills used in the Biotechnology and Molecular Biology disciplines. Students analyze DNA and proteins using gel electrophoresis, DNA sequencing, PCR and Real-Time PCR, and Bioinformatics. Students perform CRISPR experiments in the lab. Students analyze their own DNA and investigate GMO foods. In ISCI 245, students use recombinant cells in a Biomanufacturing system to learn about the Biotechnology industry. The capstone courses (Biol 275, Biol 276, ISCI 245) are project based and students get an opportunity to present their original scientific projects at either StarScapes or a Scientific Conference. The skills learned in these courses are what is being used right now to develop and produce the covid vaccine, insulin, and monoclonal antibodies to treat a variety of diseases and many other useful products.

The courses outlined in this pathway are designed for students interested in pursuing degrees related to conservation, environmental science, fisheries and wildlife management, natural resources management and/or sustainability, as their main emphasis of study. Students completing this curriculum will also satisfy the Michigan Transfer Agreement (MTA) between two-year and four-year institutions and qualify for an LCC Transfer Studies Certificate of Achievement (1482).

Overview

This certificate curriculum promotes entry-level technical knowledge, ethics, and rationale for a world view of sustainable practices in agriculture, alternative energy, business, construction, energy usage, natural resource management, and public policy. This certificate is for individuals seeking to enhance their employability by supplementing their existing credentials. Examples include those studying building trades or construction management seeking to implement sustainable building practices or students who hope to work in governmental and nongovernmental agencies who intend to apply or advocate for sustainability.

This degree is designed for students who intend to transfer to a four-year college or university to pursue a baccalaureate degree in preparation for application to graduate level health degrees. These degrees can be Medical Doctor (MD), Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO), Doctor of Dental Surgery or Medicine (DDS or DDM), Physician Assistant (PA), Physical Therapy (PT), Occupational Therapy (OT), Doctor of Chiropractic (DC), Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD), or Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM).

This degree may also prepare students for a degree in Clinical Laboratory Science. Students completing this curriculum will also satisfy the Michigan Transfer Agreement (MTA) between two-year and four-year institutions in Michigan and qualify for an LCC Transfer Studies Certificate of Achievement (1482). Overview

This degree is designed for students interested in pursuing a career in mathematics, engineering, or a broad range of scientific fields. This Career Community includes the following pathways: Biology, Biotechnology, Chemical Technology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Engineering-Physics, Environmental Technology, Geography, and Mathematics. The degree includes a common set of courses applicable to the Science and Mathematics majors listed above and to many transfer institutions. Students beginning college in this degree program are encouraged to work with academic and program advisors throughout their first few semesters of study to determine their specific major area and, if transfer is a goal, the specific requirements of the transfer institution.
