In September of 2018, Dr. Marshall Thomas, the creator of VET NET Ally, graciously brought the program to Lansing Community College. This year, Dr. Thomas has allowed Andrew Cosgrove, the Director of Veteran Services at LCC, to have access to the presentation materials in order to conduct the presentation at LCC as he would like.
The VET NET Ally program was developed at California State University at Long Beach as a faculty and staff awareness program designed to educate members of the college community, foster a supportive campus atmosphere, and establish a network of visible Allies for veterans. It was designed to resemble LGBTQ Safe Zone Awareness programs after seeing how those programs have helped college staff better understand the LGBTQ community in September 2018 to conduct our first seminar.
The presentation will be split into two 2 hour long sessions, conducted by Andrew Cosgrove and Monica Del Castillo. Andrew will cover topics associated with the military and military service. Monica will be covering the impact on service members while they serve, and what effects their service has on them after they are discharged from the service and enter the civilian world. Once participants complete each session, they will receive a VET NET Ally decal that they can post within their workspace so veteran students will know they are dealing with someone who is a veteran ally and understands what the veteran has gone through during their service.
Event Disclaimer: must attend BOTH presentations to "graduate" and receive certificate. Opportunities will exist for those who can only attend one session to make up the other at a later date.
