joz mara
Joslyn ‘Joz’ Mara

Joslyn ‘Joz’ Mara fell into the Writing Center World during their time at Grand Valley State University. After three years at the Fred Meijer Center for Writing & Michigan Authors, they left GVSU with a B.A. in Writing and a deep respect for how influential writing centers could be on writers of any experience level. She was trained in a wide array of Writing Center pedagogy at FMCFWAMA, while her educational background focused on Read More developmental editing and marketing. Joz also worked as the Vice Editor-in-Chief of the Grand Valley Journal of History, getting a grip on academic publishing and communications.

After spending a few years as a cross-genre beta reader, the writing center world drew them back in. In December 2022, Joz joined the LCC writing Center team as the first full time Service Coordinator. He tackles the day-to-day questions, concerns, and scheduling. You can thank her for the respectable plant forest that thrives in the Writing Center. They are constantly on the search for the perfect mix of supporting students and supporting the staff.

grace williams
Grace Williams

Grace Williams started in writing centers as a peer tutor at her undergraduate institution, Lake Superior State University, and then worked as a graduate consultant at Eastern Michigan University while earning her MA in Literature. The professional development she received at EMU inspired her to pursue her PhD in Writing Studies from Wayne State University so she could better help students on their writing journeys. While at WSU, Read More she acted as Assistant Director of the Writing Center before graduating and joining LCC as an Assistant Professor of English. Grace has taught all manner of writing courses, from developmental to intermediate composition, but has predominantly taught first-year composition (for native and non-native speakers of English) and technical communication. Her work has been published in Praxis.

Grace values writing as a means of solidifying learning and as a mode that facilitates action. She is also attuned to the intellectual and affective labor involved in the writing process; in her classroom and mentorship, she strives to honor the ways in which students need guidance for both components. As Co-Coordinator of LCC’s writing center, she enjoys collaborating with her colleagues on campus and off, as well as supporting writing assistants in serving our students.

I have 15+ years of experience in tutoring writing, math, chemistry, etc. My favorite part of writing is asking questions and encouraging my students to be skeptical. I graduated with a bachelor’s in Biology and a master’s in Strategic Communication and Leadership from the University of West Florida. My favorite foods are shrimp and ice cream. Best buffet recommendations in town: IPOT, Ohana Sushi and Bar, and Hibachi Grill Sushi Buffet.

I am a writing assistant with degrees in communication and Spanish with a TESOL certification. I began my writing center tenure longer ago than I’ll admit and returned after teaching ESOL at a local resettlement agency. I love people, their quirks, and helping every writer share their inner words with a waiting world.

Ashton Hoffman

With a bachelor's in psychology and English, I'm familiar with both the analytical and creative sides of writing. An appointment with me will likely focus on the structure of your paper, the clarity of your ideas, and how to express those ideas at a sentence, paragraph, and essay level. In my free time, you can find me reading, sleeping, and watching way too much YouTube.

I have been working in the Writing Center for 6 years. I’m a former elementary school teacher with a background in English grammar instruction. I enjoy working with students on all types of assignments. I’m a mom to three boys, and when I’m not working in the Writing Center, I’m usually at their sporting events. I think that pineapple is the best pizza topping!

I've been a writing assistant at the LCC Writing Center for nearly six years. With formal training in academic writing and APA style, and a solid grasp of how to tutor writers, I'll help you discover what you already know about writing and develop your own unique voice. My goal is to help you walk away knowing exactly what you need to do next and feeling confident enough to do it on your own!

While working as an LCC librarian, I worked as a Faculty Writing Assistant in the Writing Center. I failed my retirement from the Library and returned to work as a Professional Writing Assistant. I have been here for seven years. I write flash fiction, poetry, and unfinished novels. I have read all of Agatha Christie’s 66 novels at least once and snorkeled on the Great Barrier Reef.

I have been passionate about writing since childhood, winning major awards in high school, such as the NAACP ACT-SO Award for Playwriting. In 2021, I published my first novel, Ungrateful, while completing my Master's in ESL at Hamline University that summer. When I'm not writing or creating graphic design, I enjoy traveling, yoga, meditating, and reading.
