Image 048 - Mainframe Computer Operator's Station

Date: ca. 1987-1996
Location: The main part of the Old Central Computer Room.
Description: The computer operator's station in the computer room in Old Central where the staff ran all of the "mainframe" systems, software, reports, and more.
Other Information:
- The IBM 3083 mainframe is in the left background, near the pillar.
- The chilled water distribution unit is against back wall.

Image 047 - Library Automation System

Date: ca. 1987-1996
Location: Old Central Computer Room.
Description: The LCC Library's automation system from CLSI was housed in the Old Central computer room.
Other Information:
- The CLSI system had a "huge 300MB hard drive" to store the database and nightly tape backups that were run.
- CLSI stands for CL Systems Inc., a company out of Massachusetts.
- The system in the picture was the second (upgraded) CLSI which was installed around late 1987/early 1988.
- There was a paper-based backup process for continuing to circulate books and materials in the library while the system was down.
- Early on in CLSI history, LCC also hosted the Lansing Public Library database. Their records would appear in searches with the location code of LPL or LPJ for the Jolly Road branch.
- CLSI was finally replaced around 1996 by Innovative Interfaces Inc., or III, which is the company still in use by the LCC Library today.

Image 045 - Employees Eating Outside Gannon Building

Date: ca. 1990s
Location: Outside the Gannon Building.
People: Richard Mull, Mary Jo Hardy.
Description: Employees enjoy a meal outside. The two employees facing the camera at the table in the foreground are Richard Mull (left) and Mary Jo Hardy (right).
Other Information:
- Richard Mull was the LCC Swim Coach and was the Athletic Director from 1992 to 2000.
- Mary Jo Hardy was Faculty in the Department of Physical Fitness and Wellness and the Head Volleyball Coach from 1978 to 1983 and 1986 to 1995.
- Mary Jo was also the Founder and Director of the LCC/LAVA (Lansing Area Volleyball Association) Junior Volleyball Program from 1979 to 2006.

Image 044 - Japanese Students in LCC Classroom

Date: ca. 1990s
People: William (Bill) Motz.
Description: LCC Faculty member Bill Motz speaks to students from Japan during a summer program at LCC hosted by LCC's International Programs Office.
Other Information:
- During the summer program Japanese students came to Lansing and also traveled to other parts of the country.
- Bill also taught as a part of the Japan Adventure Program which was LCC's study abroad program in Japan.
- Bill is also featured in Images 090, 093, 125 and 172.

Image 043 - Willie Demps Retirement Party

Date: ca. late 1990s
Location: Possibly in Old Central.
People: From left: Junko Lewis, Terri Westmoreland, Bob Ward (rear of image), Willie Demps, Kim Farley, and Kathleen DeForest.
Description: LCC Library staff members stand around Willie Demps, Director of Maintenance in the Physical Plant division, during his retirement party.
Other Information:
- Willie worked at LCC for 25 years. According to his obituary, while he was at LCC
he:
- Completed his studies in custodial management,
- Participated in the construction of the "Liberal Arts and Sciences-Health Careers Building" [A&S], and
- Was presented with the "Distinguished Staff Service Award for Outstanding Professional Achievement and Service to the College and Community."
- Willie was inducted into the LCC Distinguished Hall of Fame (see Image 041).
- Junko Lewis, Terri Westmoreland, Kim Farley, and Kathleen DeForest were all Library staff members.

Image 042 - A&S Building Cafeteria

Date: ca. 1980s-1990s
Location: The A&S Building Cafeteria.
Description: The self-serve beverage station in the cafeteria in the Arts & Sciences building.
Other Information:
- According to the menu on the wall, prices ranged from 40 cents for a small Hot Tea all the way to 85 cents for a New York Seltzer. According to the price signs on the cooler on the far right, it housed canned pop, sandwiches, and hard boiled eggs (amongst other things). The cafeteria was originally run by LCC but was later outsourced and eventually closed in the early to mid-2000s.

Image 041 - LCC Distinguished Hall of Fame

Date: ca. 1997
Location: Dart Auditorium lobby.

Description: The LCC Distinguished Hall of Fame display was in the lobby of Dart Auditorium. This image includes the first ten inductees.
Other Information:
- An unconfirmed recollection is that the Distinguished Hall of Fame was chartered by Human Resources, and that there was a committee that considered candidates each year.
- The plaque in the center of the display states that the Lansing Community College Distinguished Hall of Fame was established February 5, 1988.
- The display was removed from the Dart Auditorium lobby at some point after this image was taken. Its current location is unknown.

Image 040 - Women's Resource Center Award Winner

Date: ca. 1980s
Location: Herrmann Conference Center.

Description: Isabel Sanchez, second from right, holds her certificate for the Beverly Hunt Award from LCC's Women's Resource Center while standing with past award winners.
Other Information:
- The Herrmann Conference Center is now Herrmann House, the residence of LCC's President.
- The award is named for Beverly Hunt, third from left, who was the founder of the Women's Resource Center.
- Karen Jacobs, second from left, is a former recipient of the award and was a transfer specialist at LCC.
- Christina DeLand, far right, is a former recipient of the award and was a counselor at LCC. (She is also featured in Image 070.)
- Both Karen Jacobs and Christina DeLand worked with the Counseling and Advising Department for many years until they retired.
- The Women's Resource Center is now known as the Adult Resource Center.

Image 039 - Michigan High School Architectural Design Competition in the Gannon Gymnasium

Date: ca. 1980s
Location: Gannon Building - Gymnasium.
Description: Students work on their projects in the Gannon Building Gymnasium during the annual Michigan High School Architectural Design Competition.
Other Information:
- The annual competition was held from 1980 to 2000 and took place during the spring, usually early May.
- The competition was headed up by James Perkins who ran the architecture program at LCC.
- Project specifications were given to the participants on the day of the event and the students had the day to complete their project.
- Winners were chosen and scholarship money was awarded.

Image 037 - President Gannon Accepts an Award

Description: President Gannon accepts an award on behalf of LCC presented to the college by MACRAO.
Other Information:
- MACRAO stands for Michigan Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers.
- Dan LaFave was the Director of Counseling and Advising. (He is also featured in Image 113.)
- John Cansfield was Director of Student Services. (He is also featured in Images 094 and 117.)

Image 033 - Birthday Celebration

Description: While his staff looks on, Fred Hurlbutt, Director of LCC's Management Information Systems department, stands by a sign that says "Fred Hurlbutt is *50* and still just as shifty. Stop in with wishes." The sign was placed outside the department's offices near the corner of Shiawassee Street and Capitol Avenue.
Other Information:
- Office Unit C was on the south side of Old Central the current location of the ramp and stairs of the University Center.
- Management Information Systems was a predecessor of Information Technology Services (LCC's current IT division).
- Around the time period when this image was taken Management Information Systems wrote and supported the College's student data systems SOLAR and OLAR.
- Fred Hurlbutt died in 1987 at the age of 52.

- L.A.N.D. stands for Liberal Arts Network for Development.
- According to their website (https://landconferencemi.com/about-land/), "LAND seeks to develop and to promote a network for strengthening the liberal arts in Michigan community colleges."

- On September 13, 1988, shortly after Mrs. Dukakis's visit to LCC, her husband Michael visited the General Dynamics facility in Sterling Heights, MI where he took an infamous ride in a tank.

- Lillie Christian was a Phlebotomy instructor who taught at LCC for many years.

Image 022 - Staff Caught Eating Ice Cream

Location: Inside the Arts & Sciences Building, first floor, west side.
People: Unknown, William (Bill) Petry.
Description: Despite the cold weather outside, two staff members eat ice cream while at an event in the Arts & Sciences Building. The man on the right is William (Bill) Petry, a math professor that taught at LCC for 36 years.
Other Information:
- Bill Petry was known as "Mr. Bill" and was described as "very popular," "a great guy," "a lovely man and a very interesting person," and "the most superior math professor [the person] ever had."
- Bill was an advocate for social justice and peace beginning with the Civil Rights movement in Atlanta and later was a member of the Michigan Peace team. He was also an advisor to several student organizations at LCC, including People for Positive Social Change.
- Bill was an avid cyclist. He rode from Oregon to Michigan when he was 60, and then finished it off at 65 by riding his bike from Michigan to Maine.
- He was struck by a car while riding his bike and passed away in 2009.
- Bill's wife, Julia Petry, was Chair of the Social Science Department until her retirement ca. 2010.

Image 021 - Woman in Empty Mezzanine Level in Old Central

Date: ca. 1970s-1980s
Location: The Mezzanine Level of the Old Central Building.
Description: An unidentified woman walks through the mezzanine level of the Old Central building while it is empty and being renovated.
Other Information:
- This space became the main cafeteria on the downtown campus, and this image is probably from the beginning stages of that renovation project.
- Many people responded about the woman's "snappy style" and "patriotic ensemble."

Image 020 - Construction of Gannon Building & the Mall

Date: ca. 1975
Location: The Mall and Gannon Building at the Downtown Campus.
Description: Construction of the Mall and the Gannon Building gymnasium as seen from the rooftop of the A&S Building.
Other Information:
- This was when the portion of Washington Avenue that ran between Shiawassee Street and Saginaw Street was permanently closed to vehicular traffic, allowing for the creation of the Mall running north/south in the middle of the downtown campus.
- The vocational-technical portion of the Gannon Building (top right in the image) opened in 1975.
- The vent tower, part of the vocational-technical portion of the Gannon Building (top right in the image), was removed in May 2017. The Granger Clock Tower now stands in that location.

Location: The Blueprint Room in AOF (Academic and Office Facility).
People: Paul Engstrom
Description: Paul Engstrom, Director of Physical Plant, stands in the Blueprint Room in AOF.
Other Information:
- Paul was Assistant to the Director of Physical Plant before becoming the Director.
- The Blueprint Room was previously on the second floor of AOF, but is now in AOF 108.
- According to one source, Paul was a nice guy and great golfer.
- According to two different sources, the woman behind the file cabinet is likely Paula Rollins, a graphic designer. (She is also featured in Image 072.)

Image 018 - President Gannon, Trustees and Staff in a Boardroom

Date: ca. 1970s
Location: Old Boardroom, either in the old Administration Building or the Herrmann Conference Center.

Description: President Gannon (standing, third from right) with Trustees and Division Heads in an old Boardroom.
Other Information:
- The yellow folders on the table are probably Board packets.
- The flags in the back of the image are now in the current Boardroom in the Paula D. Cunningham Administration Building.
- John Dart, David Diehl and Lee Trumble were original Trustees when the Board was formed in 1965. Dart served from 1965 to 1979, Diehl served from 1965 to 1989, and Trumble served from 1965 to 1977.
- John Dart, David Diehl and Lee Trumble are also featured in Image 064.

Image 017 - Turner House on Downtown Campus

Date: ca. 1965-1979 [Determined using dates the museum was under the Department of State.]
Location: Downtown campus. Current site of the Upward Bound sculpture.
Description: The Turner House, which was located on the hill east of the Dart Auditorium, was home to the Performing Arts department in the 1980s and 1990s. In this image it was the location of the Michigan Historical Commission's archives and museum, housed in the building from 1943 to 1979.
Other Information:
- LCC purchased the building in the early 1980s and painted it white.
- The summer theater and dance festival was called "The Turner House Festival" because of the department's association with this building.
- A Michigan Historical Marker was erected in front of the building in 1991. It read: "Sophie Turner House: Sophie Scott Turner (1856 - 1941), a member of one of Lansing's pioneer families, built this house in 1927, Turner was considered one of the city's largest land-holders, owning vast acreage in Lansing Township and around Potter Park and Mount Hope Cemetery. This Colonial Revival house, with its broad veranda has been compared to George Washington's home, Mount Vernon. The Michigan Historical Commission was housed here from 1943 until 1979. In 1980, Lansing Community College acquired the property."
- It was torn down in the 1990s or early 2000s because it was horribly termite infested and couldn't be saved. In fact, all it took was one tap from a bulldozer and the entire structure imploded.

Other Information:
- President Sykes was LCC's 2nd president serving from 1989 to 1999.
- Judith Cardenas was interim president and then served as LCC's 5th president from 2006 to 2008. (She is also featured in Images 132, 160 and 161.)
- President Sykes, MSU President DiBiaggio and Judith Cardenas were identified by the sources listed below.
- The remaining individuals identified in the image were identified using the headshots of the Board of Trustees displayed in the Boardroom in the Administration Building.

Image 012 - Staff Members at a Health Careers Fair

Date: ca. late 1980s
People: Ron Griffith (blue shirt), Rosalie Walker (pink blazer), Steve McEnaney (tan blazer).
Description: Stephen (Steve) McEnaney, from LCC Employment Placement Services, poses with Rosalie Walker, Program Director in the Health Careers Department, at a Health Careers Fair. Ron Griffith (in blue shirt), also a Program Director in the Health Careers Department, stands to the left behind a couple of students.
Other Information:
- This was before HHS (Health & Human Services) was a division.
- At the time this image was taken Health Careers was a part of the Technology & Applied Sciences Division which is now the Technical Careers Division.

Image 011 - Pouring a Dental Impression

Date: ca. 1980s
People: Mary Pat Scozzafave (right).
Description: Instructor Mary Pat Scozzafave, on the right, oversees a student from the Dental Hygiene program as she pours up a dental impression in the dental materials lab that was in the basement of the Arts & Sciences building.
Other Information:
- Cindy Rooker (#1) is the Director of Logistics and Contract Services in the Materials Management & Print Services department and in 2023 celebrated her 35th year at LCC.
- Loretta Osborn (#2) worked many positions at LCC until she found her calling as the Outreach Coordinator within the Health and Human Services Division. She retired from LCC in May 2023.
- Dental hygienist have not been required to wear the hats that the women are wearing in the image since about 1989.
- Mary Pat Scozzafave started with the Dental Hygiene program its first year and was a part-time instructor for 43 years.

Image 010 - A Staff Meeting

Date: ca. late 1980s
Location: Old Central Building – OC 308W
People: From the left – Unidentified person, Dick (Richard) Howell, Sue Long, Ray Wawro (with back to camera).
Description: Faculty member Dick Howell and Lead Support Sue Long from the Accounting & Computer Academics Department (ACAD) in the Business Division, meet with other LCC employees including Ray Wawro (back to camera), a director in central IT.
Other Information:
- Ray Wawro was a long time employee at LCC, probably around 30 years, and left the college sometime after 2000. (He is also featured in Images 033 and 113.)
- Dick Howell taught what was then called "Academic Data Processing' (Computer Systems). (He is also featured in Image 090.)
- OC 308W was an odd shaped, very wide room that was half a flight up from the 3rd floor in the Old Central building. It was often used as a meeting room and could hold upwards of 50 people if the tables were removed.
- OC 308W sat right above the cafeteria so it "always had kind of a funky smell to it."
- The ash trays on the tables indicate that the College still allowed smoking at the time of the picture.

Image 009 - President Gannon and Staff in a Lecture Hall

Date: ca. 1980-1988
Location: The old A&S Amphitheater / Lecture Hall, A&S 170.
People: Standing next to table, from the left: Edwin Bergmann, President Gannon, Jim Perkins.
Description: Edwin Bergmann (left) and President Gannon (second from left) listen to Jim Perkins (at the end of the table) in the former A&S lecture hall. On the table in front of the men are three replicas of the Vitruvian Man drawing by Leonardo da Vinci which were the trophies awarded to winners of the Michigan High School Architectural Design Competition.
Other Information:
- Jim Perkins taught architectural courses and was the lead faculty of the Architecture Program. He also organized and ran the annual Michigan High School Architectural Design Competition, which was hosted by LCC. (More information about the competition is included in Image 039.)
- Edwin Bergmann was chairperson of the Department of Engineering Technology which was within the Applied Arts & Sciences Division. There is an LCC Foundation scholarship fund named after him. (He is also featured in Image 054.)
- A&S 170 was a lecture hall on the first floor of Arts & Sciences that was filled in during the building upgrade. It was like a mini auditorium, and used for larger lecture classes, meetings and presentations for faculty on occasion.

Image 004 - Students Signing in to a Meeting

Date: ca. Early 1980's
Location: The old A&S Amphitheater, A&S 170.
People: A young Officer William French, on the left. [Confirmed by Chief French who also said: "No clue what I was doing."]
Description: Students signing in to a meeting. Given the name cards being worn, it's most likely some kind of non-academic event.
Other Information:
- A&S 170 was a lecture hall in Arts & Sciences that was filled in during the building upgrade. The room was frequently used for non-academic events.

Image 003 - Young Students at a Health Fair Event

Date: ca. 1988-1994
Location: In the LSARC (Liberal Studies Academic Resource Center), which was on the 4th floor of the A&S Building, northeast corner.
Description: Early Elementary Science Olympiad (ESO) event, which is now known as "Steamfest." Dental, Radiology, and most of LCC's health career professions were represented at ESO.
Other Information:
- This may have been when the LSARC (Liberal Studies Academic Resource Center) was known as the Science Concepts Center or even before that.
- The circa dates for this image were determined because of the Apple 2E against the wall.

Description: A Board of Trustees meeting with a chalkboard in background that may possibly list results from a millage vote.
- Jackie (Jacqueline) Taylor was the Administrative Assistant to President Gannon, among other positions at LCC. (She is also featured in Images 113 and 139).
- Dale Herder held various positions at the college, but first and foremost he was a writing teacher in the Department of Language Skills (now the English Program). He began teaching Language Skills when the College was reorganized in 1992. (He is also featured in Images 097, 098 and 139.)
- HR was called Personnel in the 1980s so Ron Dove was the Director of Personnel. (He is also featured in Images 018, 097 and 098.)
- David (Dave) Froh was a Trustees on the LCC Board of Trustees from 1965 to 1985 and then again from 1986 to 1987. (He is also featured in Images 064, 097 and 098.)
- Erik O. Furseth was kind of a big deal in Lansing/East Lansing back in the day. He played basketball at MSU, was the "DJ" in town during the early Rock-and-Roll days and then spent years as the stadium/arena announcer for MSU Football and Basketball.
