Solved Mysteries of the LCC Archives
Each week a different image from the LCC Archives is featured in The Star newsletter along with a request for readers to send in any information they have about the image. As responses about these images are received they are collected in order to gather more information about the history of LCC.
Thanks to the efforts of LCC employees, past and present, some of the mysteries in the LCC Archives are being solved. This website will continue to be updated as information is received. Image 207 - Reception

Description: This photo was taken 2005 or 2006. It shows an outdoor reception.
Other Information:
- Gary VanKempen was the Dean of Liberal Studies.
- Bill French was Chief of Police.
- Bruce McCrea was an Economics Professor.
- May have been the dedication when the Admin building was named in honor of LCC President Paula Cunningham.
- Anand Ramaswami was the chair of Math and Computer Science and later worked in Quality Planning and Economic Development, the precursor to the Center for Data Science.

Description: This appears to be a ribbon cutting. A sign on the building reads in part, "Employment Service Center."

Image 204 - WLNZ Lookout

Description: This photo from the Lookout files shows WLNZ Station Manager Dave Downing with a number of other people.
Other Information:
- Dennis Pipper was the Assistant Program Director and Music Director and is now Associate Dean of Tech Careers.
- Lyn Peraino is a voice-over artist and long-time Lansing radio personality and the Program Director at WLNZ for many years.

People: Ron Greener.

Other Information:
- Ron Greener worked in CIT when it was Computer Information Systems for Business and Computer Applications for Business Software.
- Ron used to work at the Howell campus.
- He later worked in the Counseling and Advising Department which became Academic Advising in the Student Affairs Division.

People: James "Jim" Greene and unknown woman.

Other Information:
- Jim Greene was Director of Media Services at the time the picture was taken and would later become the Director of the Livingston County Center. He would retire in that position.
- Jim Greene was the Director of Media Services when he led the planning for the state-of-the-art Media Services facility in the TLC.

- The Class being taught may be NatSci 131.

- Gerry Butterman started at LCC prior to 1978.
- She made most of her own clothes.

Image 189 - Caricature

People: Lucille Belen (right).

Other Information:
- The woman in the photo has been identified as Lucille Belen.
- Lucille Belen was prominent in the Lansing community. She operated Belen’s Flowers for 60 years, established the Belen School of Floral Design, and, she was named to the LCC Business Hall of Fame in 1982. She served terms on the Lansing City Council and on the Ingham County Board of Supervisors. Belen passed away in 2010, at the age of 97. - Bob Baxter (left) was a part-time video producer.
- Rob Edwards (middle) still works at LCC in the Media Services Department and is a part time instructor.
- Judith Keeley (right) was “on air talent” on Channel 10. Rob Edwards (writing in 2024) thought that this photo was taken at her going away party, as she would shortly “move to a bigger market.”

Image 184 - Human Resources - Costumes

People: Leonard "Len" Petersen (front).
Description: This image originates with the Human Resources Department. It appears to have been taken at a costume party of some sort.
Other Information:
- Len Petersen, in the center forefront of the photo, was an Economics professor at LCC. He retired circa 1989. (He is also featured in Image 072.)

Other Information:
- The woman on the left is Lu Anne Cuthbert (formerly Lu Anne Clark). She is a science instructor at LCC.

Image 182 - Staff Lunch

- One source believes that the woman on the left is named “Sandy” and that she was then the Technical Careers administrative assistant.

Image 181 - Precision Measurement Equipment

Date: ca. 1980s
Description: People operating “precision measurement equipment.”
Other Information:
- The machine has been identified as a “coordinate measuring machine,” or “CMM.” Cameron Dean states, “I worked with the Unix computer controller for Lansing GM, manufacturing Ziess CMM…These machines would move a safire tip rod to measure distances much less than a millimeter for quality control of the manufacturing process.”

Description: An unidentified outdoor performance at the Outdoor Amphitheater.
Other Information:
- The setting of the photo had been erroneously identified as being Adado Riverfront Park. We know now that it was taken at the outdoor amphitheater, outside of the Gannon Building.
- From Teresa Purvis: “The Performing Arts was taken at the stage at the foot of the Turner Hill (Turner House was taken down between Dart and HHS.)…In past years, we had summer performances in the outdoor amphitheater.”

- Rhonda Ritter worked in the Registrar’s Office and in Admissions. Her last position at LCC was Director of Enrollment Services.

- The man on the left is Jeff Buchin. Buchin holds a world record for the bench press, and helped establish weight lifting and powerlifting on the downtown campus in the 1980s.

- Dedria Humphries (#1) was a professor in the English, Humanities and Social Sciences Department (and sister to James Humphries). She, along with Toni Glasscoe, was instrumental in developing and implementing the “Passport to Success”: Coalition for College and Career Readiness (C3R) initiative that aimed to provide a cohesive way to help students transition into college from high school in the areas of reading, writing and math.
- Chris Strugar-Fritsch (#2) was LCC’s Director of Facilities.
- Liz Nobis (#4) was a professor in the Legal Studies Program.
- Carol Harton (#4) was an administrator at LCC. She passed away in August 2009.
- The event was organized by the LCC Foundation.
- Proceeds from the event were used to establish a “Next Generation” Endowed Fund to provide support to students and faculty and promote programs that foster innovation and excellence, and to help the community move forward with new academic programs for the next wave of educational opportunity.

- Larry Meyer (#3) was a Trustee on LCC’s Board of Trustees from 2010 to 2020.
- Pam Blundy (#4) held many roles during her 39 years at LCC and was the Executive Assistant to the President when she retired in July 2023. (She is also featured in Image 125.)

- Marvin Fouty (#3) was Elizabeth Vanderlip’s father and the 2020 Distinguished Alumni. He passed away in March of 2020.
- Deborah Ginsburg (#4) is a current member of the UM Health-Sparrow Foundation Board of Directors.
- Ira Ginsburg (#4) was Sparrow's Senior Vice President of Operations. He retired in 2012 after 47 years with health system.
- The event was organized by the LCC Foundation.

- Cindy Rooker (#1) is the Director of Logistics and Contract Services in the Materials Management & Print Services department and in 2023 celebrated her 35th year at LCC.
- Loretta Osborn (#2) worked many positions at LCC until she found her calling as the Outreach Coordinator within the Health and Human Services Division. She retired from LCC in May 2023.
- James W. Butler III (#3) served on the University of Michigan-Sparrow Health Board of Directors. He passed away in 2020.
- Chris Holman is a prominent businessmen in Lansing. Among other things he was business editor and on-air personality at WLNS TV 6 in Lansing.
- Sheri Jones (#4) is a news anchor for WLNS TV 6 in Lansing.
- The event was organized by the LCC Foundation.
- Proceeds from the event were used to establish a “Next Generation” Endowed Fund to provide support to students and faculty and promote programs that foster innovation and excellence, and to help the community move forward with new academic programs for the next wave of educational opportunity.

Image 163 - Dolly Semrau Memorial Golf Scramble

Description: Four golfers pose by the Dolly Semrau Memorial Golf Scramble event sign. The annual golf outing raised money for health care scholarships for both LCC and Michigan State University.
Other Information:
- Dolly Semrau graduated from Sparrow’s nursing school in 1955, and acted as lead nurse and chief organizing agent for over 24 years at the Jean Granger Prenatal Care Clinic, a facility for pregnant women (in Ingham County) without health insurance.
- The memorial golf outing was held for 10 years, from 1998 to 2007.
- Matt Ramsey was an officer with the Lansing Police Department.
- Dick Barker was inducted into the Greater Lansing Area Sports Hall of Fame in 2001.
- Bill Allen was the Principal at Lansing Eastern High School. He was inducted into the Greater Lansing Area Sports Hall of Fame in 2012.
- James (Jim) Lynch worked in the Technical Careers Division at LCC and retired in July 2021. (He is also featured in Image 152.)

- Dr. Judith Cardenas was LCC’s 5th President, serving from 2006 to 2008. (She is also featured in Images 015, 132, and 160.)
- As of June 2024, Trustee Proctor is still on the Board of Trustees. He began serving in 2003 so he is current in his 22nd year on the Board. (He is also featured in Image 147.)
- Trustee Smith served on the Board of Trustees for 13 years, from 2005 to 2018. (She is also featured in Images 132 and 160.)
- Trustee Laverty served on the Board of Trustees for 6 years, from 2003 to 2009. (He is also featured in Images 132, 156, and 160.)
- Trustee Hollister served on the Board of Trustees for 7 years, from 2007 to 2014.
- Trustee Pelleran served on the Board of Trustees for 7 years, from 2000 to 2007. (She is also featured in Images 132 and 160.)

Description: Trustee Laverty and President Paula Cunningham present a Lansing Community College scholarship to the family of Benjamin Richard Lambert, the first baby born in April of 2005.
Other Information:
- On April 1 of every year, Lansing Community College provided a scholarship to the first baby born in recognition of National Community College month. (It is unknown which years these “April Baby Scholarships” were awarded.)
- Benjamin was the 12th child born to his family. At the time of his birth, the children of the Lambert family ranged in age from newborn to 15.

- Barbara Larson was a Vice President of Administrative Services and Finance.
- Jan Stewart worked for many years in IT and then moved to HR.
- Annette Parker was an administrator in the Technical Careers Division.
- Rebecca (Becky) Beard was the Purchasing Director. Becky was the catalyst for the development of the Veteran’s Memorial exhibit located in the Health & Human Services (HHS) building. (She is also featured in Image 132.)
- Rich Howard was the Vice President of Strategic Initiatives and possibly the Board Liaison. He worked very closely with President Paula Cunningham, for whom the current Administration Building is named. He also played a very prominent role in the planning and construction of the University Center.
- Delores Eiseler worked in the Purchasing department as a Buyer.
