Pregnancy and Related Conditions Student Accommodations, BP 4.120

1. Purpose


To provide students who are pregnant or are experiencing pregnancy-related conditions that rise to the level of disability the ability to receive reasonable accommodations to ensure equal access to the College’s educational programs and activities under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).


2. Scope


Students affected by pregnancy, childbirth, miscarriage, termination of pregnancy, false pregnancy, pregnancy-related conditions, and/or recovery who are seeking accommodations under the ADA.


3. Prerequisites


  • Schools must offer services and benefits to students who are pregnant or have a related condition as they would for other students with temporary disabilities.
  • Students with the aforementioned conditions may also be eligible for disability protections and services under the ADA, depending upon their condition.


4. Responsibilities


  • The Center for Student Access (CSA) – Responsible for supporting students with reasonable accommodations for childbirth, miscarriage, termination of pregnancy, false pregnancy, pregnancy-related conditions, and/or recovery. 

  • Student – Responsible for scheduling an intake appointment with CSA, submitting the necessary documentation, forwarding their instructor memo to instructors if accommodations are approved, and communicating with instructors and CSA. 

5. Procedure


  1. A student contacts The Center for Student Access to schedule an appointment.

  2. A student provides appropriate documentation prior to their intake appointment to discuss accommodation(s) based on disability involving pregnancy, childbirth, or pregnancy-related conditions.

  3. An Access Consultant meets with the student to review their documentation and discuss accommodations.

    1. If accommodations are approved, the student will receive an Instructor Memo to provide to their instructors activating the accommodation(s).
    2. If accommodations are not approved, an Access Consultant will communicate that to the student

7. Definitions


  • Pregnancy and Pregnancy-Related Conditions - The full spectrum of processes and events connected with pregnancy, including pregnancy, childbirth, termination of pregnancy, or lactation; related medical conditions; and recovery therefrom.
  • Reasonable Accommodations - Individualized accommodations to the College’s policies, practices, or procedures that do not fundamentally alter the College’s education programs or activities.
