Support Students in Journalism

Louise J. Wirbel spent her career working in journalism, from editor of the Grand Ledge Independent to trusted adviser to the staff of The Lookout, Lansing Community College’s student newspaper.

In her role at LCC – where she also served as an adjunct faculty member – Louise struck the right balance of patience and urgency, giving student journalists the space to learn, the confidence to push boundaries, and the wisdom to know which approach was best. Under her guidance, The Lookout earned multiple statewide and national awards including the prestigious Pacemaker of the Year.

In 1991, Louise wrote a guest column for the Lansing State Journal. She talked about the struggle that aspiring journalists were experiencing finding jobs and the importance of remaining dedicated to the profession despite its ongoing challenges.

“Whether they be reporters, photojournalists, artists or marketing majors targeted toward advertising sales, the enthusiastic students offer fresh perspectives and unlimited capacities of energy to spark the profession,” she wrote.

That challenge remains today, and that is why the Louise J. Wirbel Journalism Scholarship supports LCC students studying journalism, with preference given to applicants from historically marginalized groups.
