LCC's Surgical Technology program is selective admissions. To be considered as a candidate, students must meet admission requirements beyond those required for general admission to the college. There is no waitlist for this program; instead, acceptance is based on a point system. Please refer to the program advising guide for details about the application process and admission requirements.

Sterile Processing Courses – Status Update
The Sterile Processing courses are currently on hold due to staffing limitations. We have started an interest list for those who would like to be notified if the courses become available. If the program is offered in Spring 2026, a representative from the Health and Human Services (HHS) Division will contact individuals on the list.

After the completion of prerequisite courses, you'll begin your journey to an associate degree and an opportunity to take and pass the certifying examination offered by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting.
Lansing Community College's Surgical Technology program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs.

Degrees and Certificates Offered
Sterile Processing Technician, CC
Overview
This is a 7-credit certificate program. The sterile processing technician is responsible for processing and inventorying hospital equipment, supplies, and instruments used in surgery and most hospital departments. They decontaminate, clean, sterilize and dispense supplies. This two-course certificate includes lecture, campus laboratory, and an externship. Successful completion of the certificate qualifies a student to take the National Certification Examination for Sterile Processing and Distribution.
This certificate is completed in one semester. Students take the lecture and lab course, STPR 145, during the first 8 weeks of the Spring semester, followed by the externship course, STPR 148, during the last 8 weeks.

Surgical Technology, AAS
Overview
The surgical technologist is a member of the surgical team, working in hospital operating rooms, acting as the primary scrub person who handles the sterile instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary for operative procedures. The surgical technologist works with the surgeon, anesthesiologist, anesthesiologist assistant, nurse anesthetist, surgical first assistant, registered nurse, and licensed practical nurse in the delivery of quality patient care during invasive surgical procedures.

Program Learning Outcomes
- Outcome #1: Student will employ affective domain skills (promptness, attendance, courtesies, teamwork, exemplary work ethic) as they relate to all aspects of evolving into a highly valued co-worker in the surgery department.
- Outcome #2: Student will advocate for the patient by maintaining patient confidentiality and promoting patient safety before, during and immediately after the surgical procedure.
- Outcome #3: Student will prioritize and coordinate all aspects of each surgical procedure using critical thinking and problem solving skills.
- Outcome #4: Student will recognize safety hazards to self and others within the operating room and will use standard established techniques to handle and pass surgical equipment to avoid injuries.
- Outcome #5: Student will demonstrate clear communication skills with entire surgical team regarding all aspects of the procedure and interact professionally within the operating room environment.
- Outcome #6: Student will utilize principles of surgical asepsis and sterile techniques to set up and open instrument packs and other materials required for the procedure without contamination.
- Outcome #7: Student will use knowledge to set-up and prepare the mayo stand, back table, and instrumentation order as required.
- Outcome #8: Student will anticipate and pass instrumentation and equipment in the standard sequence and order required by the surgical procedure and surgeon.
- Outcome #9: Graduate will demonstrate knowledge and skills to meet or exceed the National Board Exam pass rate administered by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA).
