We offer excellent hands-on experiences and will train you in relaxation massage, clinical and sports massage, human anatomy and physiology, business management, and specialty techniques. Lansing Community College's Massage program is accredited by the Commission on Massage Therapy Accreditation.
The Massage Therapy Program at LCC
Please refer to the Massage Therapy cost estimator sheet for in-state, out-of-state, and international tuition rates. To verify residency status, please check the Registrar’s Residency page. This cost includes all tuition, course fees, application fees, textbooks, supplies, etc. Financial Aid Process may be available to help with program costs. LCC's Financial Aid office can help navigate this. The Financial Aid office also has information about other state and federal tuition aid programs including Michigan Reconnect. Additionally, LCC offers a variety of awards and scholarships for students. Finally, financial aid opportunities are also available through some massage organizations including American Massage Therapy Association Student Scholarship and Imagine American Foundation.
The daytime massage program is a three-semester commitment that runs through the Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters. Daytime students can expect classes to meet multiple days per week during daytime hours, with Massage Clinic sessions typically concluding by approximately 2:30 p.m. Additional weekend chair massage and sports massage events are scheduled during the Spring and Summer semesters.
The evening massage program is also a three-semester commitment, running through the Spring, Summer, and Fall semesters. Evening students can expect classes to meet several evenings per week, with courses beginning after 5:00 p.m. Massage classes and Clinic sessions may be scheduled until approximately 10:00 p.m. Additional weekend chair massage and sports massage events are scheduled during the Summer and Fall semesters.

Overview
Massage therapists treat clients by using touch to manipulate the muscles and other soft tissues of the body. With their touch, therapists relieve pain, help heal injuries, improve circulation, relieve stress, increase relaxation, and aid in the general wellness of clients.

Where does a massage therapist work?
Massage therapists are employed in a variety of settings. The three most typical are in a chiropractors office, a private massage studio, and a spa/salon. Many also work in fitness environments such as gyms or workout studios. Massage therapy positions in healthcare settings are also expanding in mid-Michigan. If you desire to travel, you can work in a resort setting or on a cruise ship.

Our program stands apart from others for many reasons.
- STAFF – our teaching faculty are highly educated. All of the instructors have at least a bachelor’s degree while we have several with master’s degrees. Many also have specialty certificates such as certified personal trainer and EMT.
- LICENSING EXAM PASS RATES – our grads continue to score well on the state licensing exam, scoring higher than the state and national average.
- CURRICULUM – our academic program meets state and national requirements by offering 625 hours
of massage education. Additionally, our massage therapy students have access to exceptional
faculty who implement innovative learning experiences such as:
- interprofessional education collaboration with MSU’s College of Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine
- hospital-based massage adaptations in LCC’s hospital simulation lab
- sports massage on Division I athletes at MSU
- massage delivered to anxious dental patients in LCC’s Dental Hygiene clinic
- practical experiences with geriatric massage at local assisted living facilities
- COMMARADARIE – we have structured our program so that groups start and finish together. Research has shown that this format is optimal for students to connect with and help each other. We definitely see this happening! Students often make life-long connections, not to mention significant professional connections. Our staff, too, foster a strong sense of support and success in the program by helping students in whatever ways they can.
- EQUIPMENT – we have state of the art equipment in our massage classroom and clinic. From fully hydraulic tables to hydrocollator units, we maintain cutting edge facilities. This includes incorporating tech into our teaching. We use a smart board in the classroom; students use LCC iPads to chart clinical notes or photograph postural improvements; clinic clients scan QR codes to fill out student feedback forms on their smartphones.

When does the program start?
You can start the evening program in January and the day program in August.
How long does it take to complete the program and what type of degree do I earn?
Both the day and evening Massage Programs are completed in three consecutive semesters.
How large are the massage classes? What is the instructor to student ratio?
We currently have 18 massage tables in our facility. Maximum class size is 24 students. When performing hands-on work, the instructor to student ratio is 1:15. There is a faculty and lab assistant in the clinics.
Do I need to take any prerequisites before enrolling in the program?
No.
Are there any admission requirements for enrollment in the program?
Students need to be 18 years old, provide a copy of a valid driver's license or state identification card, must have reading level of 5 and writing level of 6.
Are there any physical requirements that I must meet?
There is no physical assessment prior to enrolling in the program, but it helps to be physically fit and agile to perform massages without becoming fatigued or injured. Please see the Massage Program website for a complete list of physical requirements, skills, and aptitudes that are required for success in the program.
