The Office of Empowerment presents “Movies That Matter,” a film series that highlights diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging and cultural-focused films that spark conversation and reflection. Each screening is designed to create space for learning, dialogue and deeper understanding of lived experiences across different communities.
This month’s selections recognize Disability Pride Month.
Wonder
July 28
Noon-2:30 p.m.
“Wonder” is a heartfelt film that follows Auggie Pullman, a young boy with a facial
difference, as he navigates school, friendship and belonging. Through Auggie's journey,
the film explores themes of empathy, kindness, inclusion, disability awareness and
the impact of embracing differences.
Following the screening, participants are invited to engage in a facilitated discussion
connecting the film's themes to disability inclusion, accessibility, belonging and
the importance of creating communities where everyone is valued, respected and empowered.
Crip Camp
July 30
Noon-2:30 p.m.
“Crip Camp” (2020) is an award-winning documentary that tells the story of a groundbreaking
summer camp for teens with disabilities and the friendships that helped spark the
modern disability rights movement. The film explores themes of disability justice,
advocacy, accessibility, community and belonging while highlighting the power of collective
action in advancing equity and inclusion.
Following the screening, participants are invited to engage in a facilitated discussion
connecting the film's themes to disability rights, accessibility, allyship and creating
more inclusive communities where everyone can thrive.
