Mission
The mission of the Dental Hygiene program is to graduate a qualified dental hygienist who competently, ethically, and professionally practices comprehensive dental hygiene care to a diverse population.
Goals
The Dental Hygiene Program Goals have been designed to incorporate and compliment Lansing Community College’s vision and mission. The program goals represent the program mission and philosophy through the three key principles of professionalism, education, and service:
Professionalism:
- Apply ethical reasoning and incorporate ethical behavior and professionalism into the dental hygiene profession.
- Promote an active interest and involvement in the professional association.
Education:
- Implement curriculum to prepare students to successfully pass all board examinations to obtain professional licensure in Dental Hygiene.
- Provide comprehensive curriculum to prepare students for employment in the dental hygiene profession.
- Provide a respectable classroom/lab learning environment through faculty who are competent in advanced teaching methodology, evidence-based research, and use of current technology.
- Sustain a dental hygiene program that promotes state of the art, patient centered dental hygiene care.
- Motivate students to qualify for and succeed in further education endeavors.
Service:
- Provide students and faculty the opportunity to deliver comprehensive oral care services to a diverse population at our on-campus dental clinic as well as in a variety of local and county settings.
Outcomes
Upon completion of the required courses within the Dental Hygiene Program curriculum, the student will:
- Graduate with the knowledge and clinical competency required to provide current comprehensive Dental Hygiene services.
- Interact effectively with patients, peers and dental health care members utilizing professional written and oral communication.
- Develop an identity of self, supportive of continuous learning and professional endeavor.
- Exhibit ethical behavior consistent with professional conduct.
- Initiate and assume responsibility for health promotion and disease prevention activities.
- Acquire and synthesize information in a critical, scientific and effective manner.
- Be competent in the use of dental technology.
