The Cesar Chavez Learning Center, affectionately known as the CCLC, is where YOU belong! The CCLC provides a comfortable atmosphere where students from all backgrounds get support academically, socially, and personally. The center’s Director, program coordinators, student staff assist students and provide guidance on how to navigate campus resources and other educational opportunities. The Center offers a space to engage the entire campus community and specifically focuses its programming and services within four key areas:
- Inclusion
- Access for underserved students
- Cultural awareness
- Mentoring
The Cesar Chavez Learning Center at Lansing Community College provides a seamless web of targeted support services to select high school students, and both traditional and non-traditional college students through a variety of programs in two primary service areas: Pre-College Programs and College level Programs. CCLC Provides participants with academic and non-academic support services designed to enhance preparation for high school graduation; foster access to and meaningful engagement at the post-secondary level and then to persist though graduation from Lansing Community College or transfer to a four-year institution. The CCLC provides students with academic support, leadership development, and community engagement opportunities in an inclusive environment to promote academic success through high-quality programming and holistic approach to student development for various populations of student from Lansing and the broader community.
Our holistic programming provided intentional interventions via wraparound services and supports developed for students who are BIPOC- Black, Indigenous People of Color, LGBTQ+, First-Generation, and low-income households form underrepresented groups or whose high school has a low college-going rate.
The Office of Diversity and Inclusion (ODI) provides resources that foster awareness as well as empower students with knowledge, tools and experiences that promote global citizenship an a more inclusive campus. We thus embrace an inclusive community that brings together students, faculty, and staff of different racial and multi-racial, ethnic and multi-ethnic, gender and sexually diverse, economic, religious, and national identities and ages. The Office of Diversity & Inclusion and the Cesare Chavez Learning Center envisions a college that is supportive of al perspectives, cultures and differences. Our core values are evident through services, programs, and initiatives that ensure the creation and maintenance of a diverse and inclusive community that affirms diverse perspectives, attitudes, beliefs and experiences.
Programs at CCLC
Committed to the values of meeting the needs of our times, social justice, radical hospitality, student leadership and cultivating brave spaces, we have created programs focused on instilling these values and meeting the needs of our students. We believe that all students, regardless of age, family background, learning style, or diverse-ability, should have equal opportunity to reach their full personal, academic, and career potential.
Access - Access to College and Careers with Excellence through Student Services
The ACCESS Program provides wraparound student support services and intervention efforts to ensure students are equipped with the skills necessary to make the transition to college, persist following their first year of enrollment, and ultimately to graduate or transfer to a four-year university. It is designed to support current and potential LCC students, especially those of low-income, First-Generation, diverse-abilities, and underrepresented populations.
LUCERO - Latinos Unidos con Energia, respect y Orgullo – Latinos United with Energy, Respect and Pride
The LUCERO Program is designed to attract and retain students of color, particularly Latinos, by providing a space where they would feel welcome and receive support. LUCERO focuses on developing student skills in academics, leadership and professionalism. Students are encouraged to participate in at least one workshop or activity per area each semester to get the full experience.
MAP - Men About Progress
Men About Progress (MAP) is an initiative established by the Office of Diversity and Inclusion in 2016 to increase, encourage and support the inclusion and educational success of male students of color, particularly African American males, as well as any student who expresses interest. MAP serves as an intentional intervention to assist program participants in their academic and career endeavors, while promoting and advocating for an improved educational experience at LCC and enhanced quality of life.
WISE – Women Inspiring Scholarship through Empowerment
The WISE Institute is dedicated to the education and support of the professional career interests of students who self-identify as women at Lansing Community College. WISE seeks to inspire, support and empower women by offering educational opportunities to develop knowledge and leadership skills, build professional and personal connections, promote the presence of professional women, and foster mentoring relationships.
Additional Programs/Resources Offered in CCLC
Cesar Chavez Learning Center has a number of additional programs and resources available for students. Computers, printers, and scanner are available for CCLC scholars during office hours. Current participants may also borrow graphing calculators and digital voice recorders. A variety of test preparation books are also available for loan. Supplies to complete class projects are also available up on request and availability.
MENTORING Program
The Cesar Chavez Learning Center Mentorship program is designed to help LCC scholars achieve their career development and personal achievement goals by pairing them with mentors that will support them in four areas along their journey. The CCLC’s Mentorship Program provides students in with an immediate connection to peers, faculty, professional and hometown mentors; creating a culture that sees mentorship as an effective way of developing individuals.
JOB SHADOW Program
In partnership with the Office of Diversity & Inclusion, the Cesar Chavez Learning Center (CCLC) job shadow program places program participants into job shadow positions within area businesses. Unique businesses and organizations across all different fields and industries volunteer, many of which participate to provide the students with these critical real-world experiences.
DIVERSITY CHAMPIONS
Diversity Champions is a program to support the faculty, staff and students who aspire to actively work to create a welcoming and inclusive campus environment. A Diversity Champion is an individual committed to learning about diversity, equity and inclusion, and who is willing to serve as a liaison to spread ODI Division programming across campus.
CULTURAL AWARENESS COMMITTEES
The purpose of the Diversity and Cultural Awareness Committee is to promote awareness of diversity issues, provide cultural activities/events, and increase overall diversity at the College.
