Canvas Platform Data Breach
Instructure, the developers of the Canvas platform, announced a data breach that occurred on May 7, 2026. Canvas provides course websites, assignments and communication, and is used in 41% of higher education institutions in North America.
The Lansing Community College learning management system is D2L. LCC does not use Canvas and has not been impacted by the compromise.
Individuals who have Canvas accounts for access to systems at other organizations should follow-up with those organizations, change their password and remain vigilant to targeted cybersecurity attacks.
Instructure stated that the compromised information included personal identifying information such as names, email addresses, student ID numbers and Canvas messages. ShinyHunters, the hacking group that claimed responsibility for the Instructure data breach, said it had accessed data from more than 275 million people across nearly 9,000 schools.
