Where do you begin?
You start by taking a placement test which is given in the Testing Services Center. The test scores are used to place you into one of the five levels of instruction listed above. Following the placement test, you will need to speak with an ESOL advisor about your test results and correct course placement.
You can visit the Testing Services Center now to see times the Center is open for testing as well as it's location, and other testing information. International students are admitted based on TOEFL scores. However they are also required to take the Accuplacer when they arrive on campus for international student orientation.
Students who meet placement requirement in the Levels of English Proficiency (LOEP) Language Use, but whose LOEP Listening score falls below the minimum required for registration, must co-enroll in ESOL 100, Listening Improvement (2 credits), during their first semester.
Integrated Reading and Writing
Integrated Reading and Writing courses, offered through the English Department, offers a comprehensive reading program consisting of courses ranging from pre-college to college readiness in reading. These courses offer skill instruction and practice in such areas as comprehension and recall, vocabulary, and increasing reading speed.
How do you know if you need a Developmental Writing class?
For reading and writing placement, you may submit ACT, SAT, or ASVAB scores, which may exempt you from placement testing. If you have taken a test, other than those listed, or if you have completed developmental reading and/or writing coursework at another institution, please make an appointment with the English Program Director or Academic Coordinator to discuss placement options. You may also take the Accuplacer exam offered in the Testing Services Center.
