The theater program at LCC is currently gearing up for their performance of Collective Rage: A Play in Five Betties. Recommended for an adult audience, the play is about five different women named Betty and how they navigate their identities, angers and desires. The play premiered off-Broadway at the Lucille Lortel Theatre on September 12, 2018. The cast list at LCC consists of Liv Challa as Betty 1, Betz Lund as Betty 2, Vahlaree Aidan as Betty 3, Josh Thompson-Linton as Betty 4, Samuel Barrix as Betty 5. The show will have performances October 10, 12, 11, 17 and 18.
One month later in November, the Dart Auditorium will be home to the Island Song musical, which is being directed by Kelly Stuible-Clark. The musical tells the story of people in their 20s and 30s living in New York City and how they navigate their lives. According to Broadway Licensing, Cooper is an actor giving himself a year to get his first big break; Caroline is figuring out her independent life after a messy breakup; Will, an architect, and Jordan, a high-powered executive, are discovering how their personal ambitions fit with a relationship; and Shoshana is finding herself amidst a flurry of New York City romance. The cast at LCC consists of Ny'Kieria Blocker as Caroline, Andres Perez as Cooper, Lynsdey Camp as Jordan, Lizabeth Desmet as Morgan, Xia Skowronek as Shoshanna, Kitana Espinoza as Taylor, Terry Furton as Will, Brycen Dunham as Stosh, Mya Johnson-Wade as Tallulah, Caroline Abaalkhail as Wallendia and Lydia Castilhos as Bucket Drummer/Featured Dancer/Ensemble. The performance dates will be November 7, 9, 14 and 15.
Audition processes for each show can vary depending on what the director would like to see from those attending the audition. Some auditions consist of cold reading and other times students are asked to sing and present a monologue. However, the audition dates and information will always be on the LCC performing arts website.
LCC’s Performing Arts program offers many opportunities for those interested in theater. According to the video on their website, the LCC theater program sets students up for an easy transfer to other schools. Throughout the first three semesters of the program, students gain studio experience, which culminates in Black Box Theatre performances. There are also supplemental courses that allow students to learn stage combat, makeup, theater history, improvisation and directing. “If there are students interested in costume design and they are theater majors or enrolled in the Technical Theatre course, they may be given the opportunity to be an assistant designer on a production or work closely with the designer,” Paige Dunckel, the theater program faculty chair, said.
Students who are in the theater program have the opportunity to be crew in the program’s productions. For a lot of the theater classes, theater majors are required to complete lab hours. This means that students can get those hours by working as stage managers, assistant stage managers, backstage crew, costume crew, light board operators, soundboard operators, properties crew, house managers and ushers.
There are three theaters located on the school’s campus. The biggest auditorium is the Dart Auditorium. It is 454-seat theater which hosts LCC’s Theatre, Dance and Music Program performances as well as other college and community events. The second auditorium is the Black Box Theatre, which hosts several smaller productions. Lastly is the Outdoor Amphitheater, which is located directly in between Dart Auditorium and the Gannon Building. The theater hosts the LCC Performing Arts' annual Summer Stage Under the Stars Festival as well as other campus-wide events.
Any LCC show is free to attend for anyone, and the doors open 30 minutes before the performance time. You can get your ticket vouchers at the box office. The box office is located towards the front doors of the auditorium.
