On the 3rd floor of the TLC building, a new event put on by librarians has opened up to students and staff alike.
Silent Readers is a program that takes place every Tuesday from 12:00-12:45 p.m. where people come together to relax and read.
LCC Library Circulation Specialist Robin Moore encourages people to join in hopes of creating a community. “Students and employees can come and read silently for 30 minutes,” Moore said. “And for the last 15 minutes, if you want to conversate about what you're reading or whatever, we allot that time as well.” Readers do not have to talk about their books, as they could just read for the full 45 minutes.
For students without a book or looking for something new to read, a pop-up library is offered, featuring new releases and popular genres. Additionally, snacks and bookmarks are available to the readers.
LCC Reference and Instruction Librarian Alice Gullet is one of the members who help set up Silent Readers along with her coworkers, Moore and Reference and Instruction Librarian Caitlyn Stypa. “Reading is a love and a source of relaxation that we all share,” Gullet said. "This is just to take a moment out of our day to intentionally remind everyone that you can take a minute for yourself—you can relax.”
So far, faculty have participated more than students, but Gullet hopes for more students to come and take a moment out of their day to relax.
One of those students, Zoe Jones, noticed the event through signage on campus. “I saw it on one of the signs,” Jones said. “It's nice to have a break and have a reason to just read a book for fun.”
