Posted across campus are fliers advertising Pedal with the Prez. Visiting the webpage listed on the Lansing Community College website, viewers can learn more about the event, meet-up times, ride routes and fun facts about biking.
Pedal with the Prez was an idea that came out of the COVID-19 pandemic. Former LCC employee Mike McGuiness brought the idea to LCC President Steve Robinson as a good way to connect with students and employees alike while maintaining social distancing procedures.
In an informational video posted on the LCC website, McGuiness said, “Why don’t we do some kind of pedal with the president, get the LCC community together. We haven’t seen each other in fifteen months. Let's get together. Let's go for a ride.”
The ride was deemed a success with both community members and staff showing up to ride along with President Robinson. As the program enters its fifth consecutive year, gone are the social distancing procedures of the COVID-19 pandemic, but here still is Pedal with the Prez.
While pedaling through Old Town, the biking group stops by Arctic Corner, an ice cream shop on the corner of Center Street and César Chávez Avenue. There, President Robinson buys every biker a frozen treat.
Students and staff are encouraged to attend the event, occurring every other Wednesday night, meeting at 6:30 p.m. in front of the Granger Clock Tower in between the Gannon and Arts and Sciences buildings. The 2025 bike route follows the Grand River, taking participants from the LCC campus to REO Town, then to the Turner-Dodge house and Old Town, before heading back to campus.
Looking to ride along? The last ride of the season occurs on Sept. 10, 2025, and is open to all. Whether someone is looking to connect with new people, get in some exercise or is simply interested in free ice cream, President Robinson encourages all to come: “Join me for Pedal with the Prez, we’ll have a great time, I’ll even buy you some ice cream.”
