Taking pride with the LGBTQIA2S+ Club

A street full of people wave Pride flags.

Those in the LCC community have many LGBTQIA2S+ resources available to them. Some of these resources are PRISM, and employee alliance group; Between the Lines, a biweekly LGBTQ+ publication; and the Trevor Project, which is the world’s largest suicide prevention and crisis intervention organization for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning young people. (For more LGBTQIA2S+ resources, visit the LCC Library Resource Guide.)

Another resource for students is the LGBTQIA2S+ Club. The club’s main purpose is to raise awareness on LGBTQIA2S+ issues and advocate for the safety and inclusion of all LCC students through discussions, community building, ongoing development and grassroots organizing.

The club sat dormant for a couple of years, as the previous faculty advisor had retired. Current advisor Lucas Van Duyne, an LCC professor in the English department, has advised the club since the 2023-2024 academic year.

Van Duyne described how the club navigates discussing current events, political issues, and anti-LGBTQIA2S+ sentiments. “We discuss political events and how they could and do impact us personally and collectively,” Van Duyne said. “We save space for folks who need to talk or discuss difficult political issues.”

The club’s last meeting for the fall semester is Dec. 3 from 4 - 6 p.m. in the Arts and Sciences building in room 2312.

Van Duyne had some advice for LGBTQIA2S+ students: “Don’t let the naysayers dim your light. Be your authentic self, always.”
