First Generation College Students

First Generation College Students are those who are the first in their family to achieve a college degree. This is a big achievement, as there can be many reasons for someone becoming a first-generation student.

Here at LCC, there are many first-generation students. On November 4, 2025 there is an event to celebrate those students attending at LCC. The event will be in the Gannon Building, Room 2214 from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. The event will have food, games, giveaways and community.

Kelly Chambers, the coordinator for the event and Executive Assistant to Dean Miller at LCC, explained the event further, “This year, LCC will be hosting its 4th Annual First-Generation College Celebration event! The theme is Empowering Each Other Through Our Stories – Our Stories, Our Strengths,” Chambers said. “The Learning Commons will also join the celebration by setting up a table in the TLC to engage with participants. Additionally, the Main Campus event on November 4th will feature a fun pop-up library and button-making activity for attendees to enjoy.”

It took Chambers a lot of time to be able to plan the event. She collaborated with colleagues from different departments to develop ideas, select engaging activities and secure a suitable space for the event, “We coordinated logistics such as room setup, music approval, and materials for games and interactive activities. Communication with different departments ensured everything was approved and organized smoothly,” Chambers said, “Overall, it was a team effort focused on creating a welcoming and meaningful experience for our students.”

LCC also offers the Brandon and Seleana Samuel Scholarship to First Generation students. Recipients for the scholarship must be enrolled in at least six credits and maintain a minimum two-point five GPA. You can find its location under the General Foundation tab on the LCC scholarship website.
