On Wednesday, October 29 students were invited to learn about the root of empowerment and how the Office of Empowerment contributes to student experiences while attending LCC and beyond. The training was presented by the Maya Angelou Training Center. At the event, they explored how diversity defines us, how it affects the ways we may navigate the world, and how students can continue to make their spaces and LCC a place where everyone feels included.

There were different focuses for the training, so the set-up process varied. However, there was one thing that stayed throughout the different set ups. From a statement from the center, “One thing that remains essential to our setup is making sure it is a safe and comfortable space for everyone to engage,” The center said. “We always strive to have snacks and some sweet treats (often various candies) available for folks and depending on the kind of training or workshop we will also provide a shared meal.”

The planning process for the event was the Maya Angelou Training Center team going through a process of combining research and their creativity to create a learning experience that engages in critical conversation and thinking.
