The Perkins Special Population workshops and mixers give students the opportunity to connect with one another while gaining knowledge and skills that will benefit them not only academically, but also personally and professionally.
The mixers are different from the workshops as they just focus on games and hangouts. These mixers enable students to feel more comfortable and confident about accessing the support they deserve. Workshops on the other hand, are structured programs focusing on specific topics.
The first workshop took place November 11 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The event, hosted by the Center for Student Access and the Perkins Special Populations Coordinator, intended to raise awareness in recognition of November being Disability Rights Awareness Month. The workshop also explored the social aspects of being a person with a disability and gauge interest in forming a disability club or support group.
The fall turnout was great, according to Perkins Special Populations Coordinator Sophia Estrada-Ferreira. “Each workshop had strong student participation, and students were highly engaged throughout the sessions,” Estrada-Ferreira said.
One of Estrada-Ferreira’s favorite moments from the fall was the mixer on West Campus. “Students were actively engaged, had fun, and were able to decompress and connect with others before heading to class, which was great to see,” Estrada-Ferreira explained.
