LCC’s men’s basketball team entered conference play earlier this month with a 10-4 record. The team had started off the season strong, banking seven wins before their first loss against Mid-Michigan College on Nov. 25.

In the opening conference game against Glen Oaks Community College, the Stars pulled ahead early, leading the Vikings by eight points by the end of the first half. By the end of the game, the Stars had scored 108 points to their opponents 88 points in their first conference win.

Last night’s game against Kalamazoo Valley Community College did not go quite so well. Though the Stars were evenly matched against the Cougars in the second half, with each team pulling 52 points, it was not enough to overcome the lead the Cougars had from the first half. The Stars lost 96-92.

But the 1-1 conference record does not accurately reflect the full story of the Stars’ season this academic year.  Head Coach Michael Ingram emphasized that athletes continue to hit personal records.

Zander Woodruff continues to lead the team to victory, being the highest scorer on the team for several games. Ingram cited that Woodruff had scored over 1000 points before conference play even began. The Laingsburg High School graduate also has been consistent with staying on the leaderboard when it comes to performances with over 50 assists and over 70 rebounds.

Ingram also spoke to the rising stars among this season’s freshmen.  “Deandre Berry has emerged as a player who can do a lot of things on the court—pass, score, play defense and rebound.” The guard from Portsmouth, Ohio, has snagged over 50 rebounds for the Stars.

Currently, there are 17 players on the team, which is the largest roster Ingram has ever had. The Stars will need that many players, too, as the team faces what Ingram calls “one of the toughest schedules in the country.” Being able to sub players out and get fresh legs in the game will give them an advantage against their opponents as the conference season progresses.

The Stars next face off against Marian University Ancilla at home on Jan. 17. Home games are free admission for all LCC students.
