LCC’s Maya Angelou Training Center (MATC) is inviting students to stop by and connect during events called Maya Moments. Students who stop by can meet members of the MATC team, pick up swag, learn more about Maya Angelou through trivia, and find out how to get involved in upcoming training and birthday events.
The main goal of Maya Moments is to encourage students to participate in the Maya Angelou Birthday Celebration, which will take place on Mar. 30 from 5 - 7 p.m. in Gannon Building, held in the Grand River Room. The celebration will also highlight LCC student artwork.
“Students are invited to submit requests for performing spoken word/poetry pieces, dance, song, or any other interpretive art as we highlight identity and the many ages/eras that Maya Angelou impacted in her lifetime,” Training Coordinator Estefania Reyes-Reynoso said in an email. “Or simply come and enjoy the talents of their peers.”
This event is taking place across all three campuses throughout the semester. The MATC staff want to make sure all students have the opportunity to learn about the birthday celebration. “We did not want to miss any students in the quest for talent,” Reyes-Reynoso said in an email.
Students interested in joining the birthday celebration can find more details on the MATC events page to RSVP or stop by a table while on campus.
All upcoming Maya Moments will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. On Monday, Feb. 2, the event will be held near the East Campus main entrance. Another event will also happen on Feb. 5 and March 4, in A&S room 1313 and on Feb. 12 at West Campus.
The Maya Angelou Training Center is named after writer, performer, civil rights activist, and educator Maya Angelou. The center continues to honor Angelou's legacy through educational opportunities revolving around equity, social justice, and empowerment for students, staff, faculty, and leaders at LCC. The center is guided by one of Angelou’s quotes: “Do the best you can until you know better. Then, when you know better, do better.”
