What's the Cardboard Classic?

Each year LCC Radio and the City of Lansing sponsor the Cardboard Classic, an event held at Gier Community Center. Contestants enter sleds made entirely of cardboard, paper, tape and glue, with creations limited only by the designer's imagination. Previous years' entries have included sleds designed as Viking ships, tanks, Scooby's Mystery Machine, bacon and eggs,a killer squid, airplanes and even a bowl of chicken soup. All of the sleds are raced down the hill outside Gier Community Center, with each sled competing against the clock. The sleds are also judged on design, and awards are given out in the various categories.

Rules & Regulations:

The Cardboard Classic is not intended to be a highly competitive event. We started it in 2006 with the goal of connecting friends, family, and community; to get everyone outside and have some fun during Michigan's beautiful winter season. Even though the goal of the event is more fun than compeitition, any event of this nature needs basic guidelines. Below is a list of rules and regulations for the Cardboard Classic. LCC Radio and Gier Community Center reserve the right to adjust these rules and regulations as needed.

  • It is not required, but all sled racers are highly encouraged to wear helmets.
  • Sled construction should consist primarily of cardboard, glue, and/or duct tape.
  • The bottom of sled should consist of only cardboard, glue, duct tape, and paint or any other coloring medium. Please do not use Styrofoam, plastic, wood or any other type of material.
  • Additional soft material items may be used to enhance to the aesthetics of the sled (ie. cellophane, yarn, limited amounts of sheets/fabric) but the majority of the sled must consist of cardboard material.
  • Hard items that could be dangerous to you and/or other event participants are forbidden. The following items absolutely CAN NOT be used : wood, glass, metal, and hard plastics. A limited about of tin foil may be used for aesthetic purposes.
  • It is $5 per sled. You can enter a sled in more than one race.
  • More than one racer can ride a sled during a race provided the sled can safely carry all racers.
  • Racers are allowed to receive a "push off" at the top of the hill by as many individuals as deemed necessary.
  • LCC Radio and Gier Community Center may amend and/or adjust these rules and regulations as needed
