Ari's Adventures: Holiday break a success

Ari's Adventures: Holiday break a success

Arianne Olayinka

This winter break was my best one yet. I set three goals and achieved them all.

My first objective was to get some rest and relaxation. I succeeded in this area by pacing myself with my "To Do" list. Furthermore, I scheduled rest days. On those days, aside from caring for my grandfather, I would simply rest.

This goal was difficult for me at first. I am one of "those people" that live and breathe the mantra, "If you have time to lean, you have time to clean."

However, once I decided to prioritize my health and wellbeing, it clicked for me that self-care counts as an accomplishment – a very important accomplishment – that I have now grown to appreciate.

My next goal was to study for my upcoming Test of English Proficiency (TEP), which I will be taking on Jan. 18. This will be the first portion of the Michigan Board for Evaluation of Interpreters Test (BEI).

Once one passes the TEP, the next step is to take the performance portion. The BEI is one of the state certifications one needs to pass to become a certified sign language interpreter in the state of Michigan.

I encourage fellow Interpreter in Training Program (ITP) students to download the app "Elevate." It is roughly $40 for a year and is worth every penny. It has daily workout activities in the areas of writing, speaking, reading, memory and math. I find it challenging and fun.

Other resources I have prepared with include a zoom study group and the books: "SAT Premium Prep" and "1100 Words You Need to Know." The latter features a variety of vocabulary and idioms.

As we all continue to navigate through this difficult time of the coronavirus pandemic, a struggle for me has been a lack of activity. This includes: physical, social and outdoor activity. My final goal I set was to tackle increasing my physical activity.

I set up an indoor mini gym at my house the last few weeks of break and have been working out. My current setup includes a treadmill, weight bench, yoga mat and weights.

My next challenge is to find an outdoor activity that I can enjoy during the cold winter months.

Readers, welcome back from break. I hope that you enjoyed it as well. Please be safe and take care of yourselves.
