Check the usage rights provided in each site below. Some sites require that you ask permission to use images, while others do not as long as you use the images for educational purposes and give credit to the creator.


Creative Commons
Search websites for images you can share, use, and remix. Creative Commons allows creators of works to release them into the public domain or license works by placing some restrictions on their use.

Google Advanced Image Search
Limit your Google image search to images that that you can reuse.

All photos are free for any personal and commercial purpose.

Free images or videos that you can use anywhere.

Public Domain, Copyright Free, Open Source, and Student Use Images
Provides links to many copyright-free or public domain image collections.

Contains quality stock photos by contributing members.

Source for photographs and images from a wide range of disciplines.

Use the library's art databases to search for images of artwork.

A searchable collection of millions of works of art from all over the world.

Metropolitan Museum of Art
A searchable collection of artwork in the MMA believed to be in the public domain.

Oxford Art Online
Use the "Search for Images Only" search box to access art works.


When you create a Powerpoint presentation, there is a built in search for images with a Creative Commons license.

Usage Rights

Public Domain - May be freely used without asking for copyright permission because they are not copyrighted.

Licensed - Are copyrighted, but may be free for limited use if you follow license requirements (for example, educational use, giving credit, etc.)

Royalty-Free - Require payment of a small fee to use the material for limited purposes.

Citing Images

When you use an image in a paper or presentation, be sure to cite it.
