• Outcome #7: Critical thinking skills: students are expected to trouble shoot experimental data, present data in a “lab meeting” style class presentation and discuss critical feedback from classmates. In addition, students are expected to design a DNA sub cloning strategy and carry it out with minimal direction.
• Outcome #8: Laboratory Notebook documentation: Students are expected to journal all activities in the laboratory, write pre-labs for each exercise (which includes purpose, procedure, safety considerations, reagents and equipment), include troubleshooting and conclusions sections as well as all document lot #, catalog # and expiration dates of all reagents, brand and model name of all equipment, etc.
• Outcome #9: Laboratory Math skills: students are expected to be proficient at fundamental calculations used routinely in a laboratory. These include: developing recipes for multi-component solutions from molarity information and vice versa, conversion of molar ratios for ligation reactions to Nano grams and vice versa, serial dilutions, and dilutions from concentrated stocks, etc.
• Outcome #10: Laboratory Safety: Students are expected to have a working knowledge of laboratory safety rules, must wear appropriate protective gear, research and act upon SDS information when needed, and plan ahead.
