Welcome to Mr Rotman's web page!!        (Jack Rotman at Lansing Community College)

Not sure where to go??

Welcome to the club ... learning involves searching -- and that can
be interesting and enjoyable.

Who am I??  What does Mr. Rotman do for a living?

I have been teaching developmental math at Lansing Community College (LCC) for a number of years ... it is a great job.  (If you like to help people, and can learn math, you might want to consider a career in teaching like me; you can ask me what the educational requirements are for teaching math in a community college, or see the links below for "AMATYC".)

My teaching includes a lot of work in the Math Lab, as well as 'traditional' classes.  I teach courses up to Intermediate Algebra (Math112 at LCC).  To learn more about the Math Lab, follow this link Math Skills Department at Lansing Community College

For my professional colleagues, here is a link to a "Math Lab Users Guide" (spring 06 version, "pdf" format), to get a general idea of how the place works:

The best things about my job are being able to help students and having really nice people to work with.  I also get variety in my work, and lots of challenges.  I am constantly learning more about people and learning.

Other Specialties ... What do I think I know a lot about??

Some things I have spent a lot of time learning over the years --

  1. Applications of algebra Hundreds of Examples in All Fields
  2. Language issues in learning algebra
  3. Retention of minorities and underrepresented groups in mathematics Minority Retention ... Issues and Resources

For Applications, follow this link for hundreds of examples from different areas ..Hundreds of Examples in All Fields

As for language issues in learning algebra, I don't have a file of 'results' to show you.  I have presented on this topic at conferences, though it has been a while.  However, I use this background whenever I teach ... feel free to ask me more about this.
