To earn a Doctor of Optometry degree requires four years of intensive 
training including class room, lab, and clinical work.  Admission and
prerequisite requirements vary with each institution.  However, all  
require that the applicant complete a minimum of three years (90 semester 
hours) of college/university education or have earned a baccalaureate 
degree prior to admission.  Students should inquire about the specific
pre-optometric requirements of the individual optometric colleges.

Eye care includes such occupations as optometrist, ophthalmologist, 
opticians, and other eye care "techs."  this is also need for general 
business support such as insurance specialists.

Colleges of Optometry require the Optometry Admissions Test (OAT).

The Accreditation Council on Optometric Education (ACOE) is the only 
accrediting body for professional optometric degree (O.C.) programs, 
optometric residency programs and optometric technician programs in the 
United States and Canada.  Both the U.S. Department of Education and the 
Council on Higher Education Accreditation recognize the ACOE as a reliable
authority concerning the quality of education of the programs the Council
