Title:  Gen Ed-University Program Requirements, Central Michigan University
Code:   1188

The Central Michigan University Program requires 30 semester hours of course
work in Humanities, Natural Science, Social Sciences, and Integrative and
Area Studies. There are three options for a transfer student to complete the
CMU University Program requirements.
A. Satisfy the MACRAO Transfer Agreement requirements (see separate guide).
    This option is highly recommended.
B. Satisfy the "Transfer Block Option" as listed below.
Transfer students are required to present a minimum of 30 semester hours
distributed as outlined below to fulfill all the University Program
requirements. In the event that a transfer student presents a minimum of
18 but less than 30 semester hours distributed as shown below, prior to
their first CMU enrollment, they are also eligible to use the outline
below to complete the remaining University Program requirements.
    I. HUMANITIES: Minimum 8 semester hours in at least two subject areas.
Choose from the following courses: ENGL 202,211,212,255,256,266,
            267; FREN/GRMN/JAPN/SPAN 121,122,201,202; HIST 211,212; HUMS 120,
            211,212; MUSC 199; PHIL 152,260; RELG 241,242.
II. NATURAL SCIENCES: Minimum 8 semester hours in at least two subject
areas with at least one lab course. Choose from the following
            courses: ASTR 201; BIOL 127,145,210; CHEM 125,135,151 & 161;
            GEOL 221,230; ISCI 121; MATH 151; PHYS 221/251.
III. SOCIAL SCIENCE: Minimum 8 semester hours in at least two subject
            areas.  Choose from the following courses:  ANTH 270; ECON 120;
            GEOG 200; POLS 120,121,260; PSYC 200; SOCL 120.
IV. INTEGRATIVE and AREA STUDIES: This is identical to CMU's University
Program, and 9 semester hours must be transferred on a course-by-
course basis. Three semester hours must apply to Sub-group A -
Integrative and Multi-disciplinary Studies; three to Subgroup B -
Studies in Global Culture; and three to Subgroup C - Studies in
Racism and Cultural Diversity in the University States, of Group
IV of the CMU University Program.
The above distribution of courses fulfills the MACRAO Agreement and will
satisfy the university program portion of your degree at CMU. Please see
your Registrar to have your transcript stamped with the MACRAO Agreement
    Satisfied endorsement.
C. In the event a student cannot transfer 18 semester hours of coursework as
distributed above, the student will be required to complete the entire
CMU University Program. Comparable coursework at another college or
university may be transferred into the CMU University Program on a course-
by-course basis when (a) it transfers as an equivalent to a CMU course
previously approved as a University Program course or (b) it transfers
without a course number and has a content congruent with the goals of the
University Program and the CMU courses approved on the University Program.

                           COMPETENCY REQUIREMENT
COMPETENCY CHANGE: As of August 2007, all CMU students (including those who
transfer to CMU) are required to complete CMU General Education requirements
for all competencies (i.e. Written English, Oral English, and Mathematics)
before completing 56 hours of coursework.
Central Michigan University expects its graduates to demonstrate competency in
three areas: English Composition, Math, and Speech. A grade of "C" (2.0) or
better in the following LCC courses found on the guide will fulfill these
competency requirements: WRIT 121/131 & 122/132 or ENGL 122/132; MATH 112,
121 or higher; and SPCH 120 or 130. Any student who transfers without the
competency requirements and 56 hours completed will be required to register
for those courses their first semester at CMU.
