Student Life and Leadership hosts LCC’s ninth annual ‘Spring Fling’
By Larry Hook The Student Life and Leadership Department hosted the ninth annual Spring Fling under sunny skies April 30 in the Washington Square Mall on LCC's downtown campus. The event featured many free events and activities, including music, dancing, prize giveaways, a U.S. Army rock-climbing wall, caricatures drawn by Dennis Preston, and Henna temporary body tattoos applied by Laura Dietrich. Food was available for purchase through the Student Hospitality Club. A new Spring Fling feature this year was an inflatable, wind-powered “coupon cube,” in which contest winners were allowed to grab as many coupons as possible in 30 seconds. Winners earned Star Card credits, gift certificates to the Gannon Building’s Hole in the Hall store and other valuable prizes. This year’s Spring Fling featured the theme, “Rock the Vote,” with many red, white and blue prizes, such as hats, pens, necklaces and balls, being given away by Student Life and Leadership workers. The State of Michigan mobile branch of the Secretary of State office was open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. to perform all functions of a regular office. “One of our main goals was to get people registered to vote for the upcoming presidential election,” Student Life and Leadership Director Denise Harris said. The Spring Fling also featured the wrap-up of LCC's efforts to assist the Greater Lansing Food Bank with Oprah's "Big Give Project." The project was a big success, Harris said, with about 800 food items being collected at various drop-off-sites at the downtown campus and LCC satellite locations. The LCC Leadership Academy coordinated the distribution of the food collection, Harris said. Harris said the Spring Fling allowed students preparing for their spring semester finals to blow off some steam and have some fun. “The weather was perfect,” Harris said. “We couldn’t have asked for better. It was sunny. It was a beautiful day.” |
