Positive Psychology, Buddhist Mindfulness & Martial Arts for People with Physical Disabilities

Mark Kelland - Social Science Professor
Wednesday, October 21, 2009
12:30 - 1:30 pm
Room 296 - Gannon Building

The field of positive psychology emphasizes helping people to be happy and to lead fulfilling lives. Buddhist mindfulness teaches us to view the experiences of our lives with equanimity, which leads to liberation from suffering. Traditional martial arts incorporate the mindful and spiritual aspects of Eastern philosophy in self-defense training. Martial arts programs designed for those with physical disabilities provide a positive opportunity for both physical activity and personal development. This session will include both a discussion and demonstrations.
