Open Entry
Spring Semester 2009
Courses/Modules (PDF)
Other Alternative Delivery Options
Lansing Community College has offered a limited number of courses in an open-entry format to provide options for students with unique schedules. In support of the Michigan Technical Education Center (M-TECSM) initiative at the West Campus, LCC expanded its open-entry offerings to include self-directed learning modules. A module—a component of an approved college course—is designated using a course number followed by a letter of the alphabet, e.g., ELTE100A.
All open-entry sections have flexible start and end dates which are defined by a Learning Contract. Open-entry courses and modules are delivered in a variety of formats, including self-directed, online, lecture, or lab, or a combination thereof. For students and employers, open entry means expanded access to training options in aviation, computer-aided drafting and design, electrical technology, employability skills, CPR refresher training, manufacturing, personal enhancement, welding, and more.
Student Learning
Contract
A Learning Contract is an agreement negotiated by the student and
the instructor/department which must be completed and approved prior
to enrollment in an open-entry section. This contract clarifies the
expectations for open-entry study and establishes start and end
dates for course/module completion. The Department reserves the
right to invalidate a contract if a student does not enroll in an
open-entry course/module within two (2) business days of signing a
Learning Contract.
Prerequisites
Questions about course/module prerequisites should be directed to
the department delivering the open-entry section. Prerequisites are
listed in the syllabus for each course/module at
http://toucana.lcc.edu/ocsweb1.nsf.
Costs
Open-entry sections are priced differently depending on the subject
matter, delivery method, and materials and equipment used. Where
billing hours and course fee are listed, the standard $25
registration fee will be applied to each semester students are
enrolled. All other open-entry sections use a Special Section Rate
which includes all fees and is the same regardless of residency
status.
Registration
Students may register for open-entry sections at any time during the
semester provided:
-
the course is open for enrollment,
-
space is available,
-
all required prerequisite assessments and/or coursework have been successfully completed,
-
orientation and/or submission of records, if required, have been successfully completed, and
-
a Learning Contract has been completed and approved.
To register for an open-entry section, contact the department at the telephone number or web site in the course listing below.
Payment
Students are responsible for payment of classes/modules in which
they are enrolled. A student may be administratively dropped if
provision for payment is not made within 24 hours. The student must
provide verification of provision for payment to the
department before beginning study.
Students should not assume they will be automatically dropped from a class or classes for non-payment, as there are many factors which will determine whether and when a student is dropped for non-payment.
Drops/Refunds
Students are responsible for dropping all courses/modules they do
not intend to start or complete. Students have up through the day
before the start date recorded in the Learning Contract to drop an
open-entry course/module and receive a 100% refund. The student will
not receive a grade, and a record of attempting the class will not
appear on the academic record.
Students dropping an open-entry course on or after the Learning Contract start date will receive a 0% refund, regardless of when they enrolled in the course.
