Skills Assessment

For general information call (517) 267-5500 or visit us online at www.lcc.edu/assessment/

Student success is our highest priority at LCC!

Before students can register for any course with a reading, writing and/or math skill level as a prerequisite, they must:

  1. Refer to the course offerings* to see which courses require reading, writing and/or math skill levels.

  2. Establish skill level by test, waiver, or proficiency.

  3. Talk with an advisor to plan a class schedule.

* Search for course offerings in Registration and Students Records (Student System) or view the PDF copy of the course schedule at www.lcc.edu/registration.

Studies have shown us that many students fail critical courses due to a lack of reading, writing and/or math skills. By setting skills prerequisites for key courses, the college expects that all students who enroll in these courses can read, write and compute at a level adequate for success. If, after testing, students find that their skill levels need improvement, LCC advisors and counselors will suggest a variety of learning opportunities that will build skills.

How to Establish Skill Levels

Students must have a picture ID and an LCC student number to test. A student number is assigned after applying to LCC.

  • Complete Placement Testing
It takes approximately two hours to complete all three placement tests. Students may need more time if advanced math placement tests are taken. These placement tests are not timed. Students are advised to take a short break between tests.

Reading and Writing placement levels do not expire.
Math placement levels of 3 and 4 do not expire.
Math levels of 5 and above are generally valid for two years. After two years, if the students wish to take a math course, they are required to retake the math or stats placement test to update their level.

Students wishing to take other LCC courses requiring a math level or prerequisite may also be required to retake the math placement test to update their level.

Testing is available until one hour before posted closing time. Testing hours vary between semesters. Call (517) 267-5500 to verify hours of operation or visit www.lcc.edu/assessment/. In addition to the downtown campus, placement testing is available at the following off-campus locations.

  • LCC East: (517) 483-9307

  • West Campus: (517) 267-5452

  • LCC Livingston Center at Parker Campus, Howell: (517) 545-3522

  • Clinton County Center, St. Johns:
    (989) 224-2017

  • Waiver Eligibility Verification
Placement tests can be waived under certain circumstances. Students seeking to determine if they have other test scores, completed courses, or degrees that may qualify for a waiver should click here for information on the waiver process. Waivers requests require one to three business days to process.

Waivers For In-Progress Courses

When a student currently is repeating a previous class at LCC that would not satisfy a prerequisite, the prerequisite-checking function in Banner bypasses this semester’s in-progress class and instead looks only at the earlier class. This will give a prerequisite error and thus block registration.

If you presently are repeating such a prerequisite class at LCC, then you will need to request a prerequisite override before you can register for the next course.

For example, if you presently are repeating READ116 so that you can take WRIT121, repeating WRIT121 so that you can take WRIT122, repeating MATH107 so that you can take MATH112, etc., then you will need an override.
