LCC Radio's AAA format offers a broad and diverse playlist. Musical selection tends to be on the fringe of mainstream popular music and rock music as well as many other music genres such as alternative rock, alternative country, jazz, folk music, world music and blues. Selections also include tracks from albums that are not singles, which leads to an enhanced and larger playlist. LCC Radio also plays many local artists, taking advantage of the rich musical environment in Mid Michigan.

WLNZ 89.7FM Your Community Radio Station also welcomes local artists and music enthusiasts to the airwaves with shows like Eclecticana Radio with Jen Sygit, Vinyl Side of Midnight with Mike Stratton, Natty Dreadlock Rock show with Rootsmon Bird, Saturday Night with Mark B, Big Band Swing with Jim Stone, Lansing On-Line News and our newest edition, Roots and branches with Jim Hall.  WLNZ also presents live music every Friday from noon to 1pm at Sir Pizza Grand Cafe in Old Town, spotlighting the incredible local and regional talent in Mid Michigan.  Check our Concert Calendar for updates on the Grand River Radio Diner Concert Series.  Monthly WLNZ takes the show on the road to communities around mid Michigan.  The WLNZ Road Show features skits and music with our house band "The Grand River Band" our usual cast of characters, a guest host and musical guest.  The first hour airs live from our location on 89.7FM and lcc.edu/radio, their is a second "all music" hour for our live audience.

It’s hard to put a definitive label on Acoustic Café’s music selections. After all, a good song is a good song…any individual set of music could contain a bit of country, rock, blues, folk, pop… and more! Hosted by Rob Reinhart, the show was launched in the early 90s during the surge of “unplugged” music sessions that artists were producing. From classic songwriters like Dylan, Mitchell, Young, Cash, Browne to contemporary artists like David Wilcox, Shawn Colvin, John Gorka, and Indigo Girls, Acoustic Café covers a little bit of everything. Rob produces his weekly program from Ann Arbor, so WLNZ is proud to feature this great show as a part of our Michigan based programming on Fridays.

The Appetizer offers a good helping of AAA music each week on 89.7HD-1. The Appetizer initially began as a side project for host, D Grant Smith while attending college. At the time, he also worked at a local public radio station and decided to create a show with the goal of mixing a larger variety of styles and genres into the program. Over the years the program has covered styles of music from jazz, alternative rock, blues, folk, singer-songwriters to R&B and more. The Appetizer has also worked to connect listeners to emerging artists including Lindsay Katt, The Rocketboys, The Light Parade, Aryn Michelle, William Fitzsimmons, Flatfoot 56, Matt Morris, Citizen Cope, Rosi Golan and more. Smith often showcases taped conversations and exclusive sessions as a part of The Appetizer. The show originates from Abilene, Texas but blends well here in Michigan as a part of WLNZ’s AAA programming.

Art of the Song is a one-hour public radio program that explores universal truths common to all creative expression - whether it be music, writing, visual arts, or just living your life as a work of art. We all have a song to sing. John Dillon and Viv Nesbitt explore the creativity of music every week on Art of Song. John describes the intent of Art of the Song as, "...expressing our creativity and thus our spiritual nature, we as individuals connect with the world at large and the greater consciousness of the universe. Through music and discussion about songwriting and the creative process, we have subtly and repeatedly delivered the message that we are all creative and that it is not only possible, but imperative that each and all of us express our creative voices.”

As a huge fan of swing music, Jim has archived 1000s of exclusive interviews, live recordings, and nostalgic radio and television moments. He shares this expansive collection alongside classic swing cuts and artists from the neo-swing movement. The simplicity of blues music with its three-chord progressions and simple structures will never undermine the degree of traditionalism and personal expression at its core. Although, the blues has remained the same since its inception most blues are open to endless improvisations, lyrically and musically. Steve Cushing's long-running radio program Blues Before Sunrise on WLNZ takes listeners back to the origins of the great American genre known as the blues. His nationally syndicated and award-winning program focuses on vintage blues and R&B from a historical perspective. For decades, Steve has served as anchor of WBEZ's nationwide broadcast of the Chicago Blues Festival, performs frequently as a drummer, and has produced several recordings by Magic Slim, Lurrie Bell, and Smokey Smothers. As both an observer and performer, his involvement in the Chicago blues scene gives listeners the chance to experience the behind-the-scenes world in the formative years of recorded blues and introduces them to the careers of lesser-known but greatly influential blues performers. Blues Before Sunrise is the blues heritage showcase!

Each week on 89.7, Phil Nusbaum hosts the Bluegrass Review. He features classics artists as well as the current wave and offers his commentary on style, lyrics or other musical features that link the songs together. He also brilliantly threads a narrative throughout any given broadcast, so that there is plenty of variety. Truth is, Phil lives and breathes bluegrass music. Beyond being a well seasoned on-air broadcaster, he has contributed pieces to NPR, taught and lectured on bluegrass music, and plays the banjo in several groups including the Urban Renewal Bluegrass, which won a Minnesota Music Academy award. Phil also holds a PH.D. in Folklore from Indiana University and has authored several articles about bluegrass music. If you want to know bluegrass music, then Bluegrass Review is the place to be.

Its been said that "without the blues there would be no rock", but what happens when the blues and rock 'n' roll come together? That's what BlueROCK is about..what happens when the two mix, meet, and mingle together. Each week Daedalian Lowry rolls out blues infused rock along with blues cuts that rock out a bit harder. Sometimes its the blues covering rock n' roll and more often, rock n' roll covering the blues - whatever connection can be made between the two is Daedalian's excuse to spin the tune on BlueROCK. Most any night during BlueROCK, you'll hear a range of artistts from Led Zeppelin, Bo Diddley, Foghat, Steve Miller, Luther Allison, Muddy Waters, Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Lil' Ed & the Blues Imperials and Larry McCray.

History: On 9/11/2001, like many other radio/TV stations, WLNZ carried the news of the terrorist attacks and the implications and impact both globally and locally. Many organizations began trying to find ways to raise the funds and aid to deal with tremendous need that the attacks created. It was during these days that station manager Dave Downing noticed that much of the news coverage was for fund-raisers after the fact; there was a need to get that information out before the events take place.

The weeks following 9/11 saw much discussion on this topic with the staff at WLNZ. They collectively decided that they would transform an hour of the morning program to concentrate on what nonprofits were doing in the area. They invited spokespeople from the various organizations in to talk about their upcoming events every day beginning the first week of October, 2001.

Over time The Coffee Break Morning Show has grown to include nearly 100 nonprofit organizations in the region that appear on the program on a regular basis. The program has expanded to include events in the Lansing community such as festivals and concerts and there have been many authors, most of them with a connection to Michigan, who have stopped by the studio as well. Coffee Break now features “Free Music Friday” where the local musicians who are performing at the City Market (Grand River Radio Concert Series) visit the radio studio and perform live on the air. Live, local music from a radio station’s studio is quite unique.

Coffee Break is nearing its 10th anniversary – seven of those years simulcast on LCC TV. The program is hosted by Jack Robbins and Karen Love, both well-known media personalities in the community.

The WLNZ Coffee Break can be heard on WLNZ from 8am -10am each weekday morning. One hour of the show can be seen on Comcast Cable on Channel 15 in Lansing and Channel 31 in East Lansing and Meridian Township, Monday through Friday. The Sing Out! Radio Magazine is a weekly, hour-long “magazine format” program on 89.7FM. The show originates from long running quarterly folk music magazine toting the same name. Hosted by Tom Druckenmiller, this program features interviews with members of the folk community alongside “live” and recorded music. Listeners are engaged in a wide range of traditional and contemporary styles that fit under the umbrella of Sing Out!’s definition of folk music: Blues, bluegrass, old-time, Celtic, singer-songwriter, world music, Cajun,and much, much more. There is simply no other music magazine that comes with closer ties to the spirit of the folk community, or with as rich and deep a history, connection and understanding of what makes folk music.

The WoodSongs Old Time Radio Hour is hosted by folk singer Michael Johnathon and features a wide range of performers from bluegrass, grassroots, Americana, Celtic, country, pop, blues and acoustic rock. Every week Michael produces this unique program from the historic Lyric Theatre in Lexington, Kentucky before a live audience. Since its inception, the show has gone from its humble roots in Lexington to a worldwide audience of over one million listeners.
