Fire Science Program

  • Protect people

  • Save lives

  • Respond to a variety of emergencies

This program is designed to prepare individuals for a career in fire fighting. Included in this curriculum is completion of the Michigan Fire Fighters Training Council Fire Fighter I and Fire Fighter II courses. In addition, students will complete comprehensive coursework in fire safety, investigation and inspection, fire command and administration, hazardous materials, and fire hydraulics. The overriding emphasis of this program is fire fighter safety and customer service.

Lansing Community College offers three avenues for obtaining the credentials necessary to work as a fire fighter or in fire science technology:

  • The Fire Science/Basic EMT Associate Degree curriculum combines the Fire Academy and EMT Academy together to prepare the student for a career in firefighting and emergency medical services.  This curriculum choice appeals to local fire service agencies that provide EMS care and transportation for the sick and injured in their communities.

  • The Fire Science Technology Associate Degree curriculum (includes the Fire Academy) prepares an individual for a career in fire fighting, fire investigation, consulting, industrial safety, fire engineering and prevention.

Both of the Fire Science Associate Degree curriculums are internationally accredited through the International Fire Service Accreditation Congress, IFSAC.

  • Fire Science Academy is a 19 credit program that provides credentials for an entry-level position.
