Reader Services provides academic accommodations for students, manages
much of the assistive technology (AT) on campus, and consults on issues
Once a student has met with an ODSS staff member to determine academic accommodations, Reader Services fulfills those accommodation requests, whether in the form of in-class assistance, alternative text formats, or assistive technology.

General Guidelines (Necessary for ALL Services)
- Meet with an ODSS staff member every semester
Students must arrange and review all disability accommodations with an ODSS staff member every semester. No services will be given until this is completed.
NOTE: Call 517-483-1904 to schedule an appointment with an ODSS staff member before the beginning of every semester. Visit lcc.edu/schedule/ for registration dates.
- Complete all forms and agreements
The ODSS staff member will give the student a terms of service policy as well as an alternative text form if the student is eligible to receive alternative text.
Students must agree to all terms in order to receive services.
- Contact Reader Services
Once registered for classes, contact Reader Services with information relevant to your accommodations.
For instance, students with an e-text accommodation must submit a filled-out alternative text form along with proof of purchase (receipt).

Guidelines for all testing accommodations
- Students are responsible for informing the instructor(s) when a test accommodation is necessary.
- Prior to the scheduled test, the student needs to ask the instructor to have the test delivered to the Assessment Center. The student is also responsible for reminding the instructor that the test will be taken in the Assessment Center.
- REMINDER: Students are to provide instructors with an ODSS Instructor Memo form and should discuss testing accommodations with each instructor during the first week of class. A copy of the ODSS Instructor Memo also needs to be given to the Assessment Center where the student plans to take the test(s) when the student makes quiet room reservations each semester.
- Testing with a reader or a scribe
- Call Reader Services (517-483-1225) at least 5 days before the test to schedule an appointment with a reader or scribe. Be sure to include what you need (reader or scribe), how much time you are allowed, and where the test will be taken (main campus, West campus, etc.).
- On the day of the test, you will do the following depending on
- Main campus:
Go to Support Services (204 GB) and check in at the front desk.
- Other campuses:
Go to the Assessment Center or main office to check in. The reader/scribe will meet the student at that location.
- Main campus:
- Readers will only wait 15 minutes past the appointment time. After 15 minutes, the Reader may not be available to assist with testing accommodations, and the appointment will need to be rescheduled for a later date.
- If the Reader is still available when the student arrives for the appointment after the 15-minute grace period, the student will only have the originally allotted period of time to complete the test.
- Students who misses 2 consecutive testing appointments without calling Reader Services (517-483-1225) or 4 testing appointments over the course of a semester will have this accommodation suspended until they meets with the Reader Services Coordinator to discuss this concern.
- Readers may only read the test as it is written and scribes may only write down the student's words as spoken. Reader/scribes may not do any of the following: explain, re-word, or assist with choosing answers on a test; tutor or teach any class materials; do personal tasks or errands; act as a go-between with the student and the instructor.
Testing in a quiet room (without a reader or a scribe):
- Students must call the Assessment Center site where the test will be taken
at least 5 days before the appointment date to schedule a quiet room.

Alternative Text Accommodations

- Provide the course information
The student must provide the course title, time, and location to ODSS at least two weeks prior to the start of the semester. This can be sent directly to Reader Services at email@example.com or dropped off at the front counter.
- Policy for late starts
If the request is received after the start of the semester, the in-class assistance will begin when an assistant becomes available. Requests are processed on a first-come/first-served basis.
- Grace period
In-class assistants will only wait 15 minutes past the beginning of class for the student to arrive.
- Policy for absences without notification
Students who miss 2 consecutive class appointments without calling, or students who miss 4 appointments over the course of a semester will have this accommodations suspended until they meets with the Reader Services Coordinator.
- Role of the assistant
In-class assistants are limited in their roles and duties and may not do any of the following: explain, re-word, or assist with assignments; take notes on behalf of a student; tutor or teach any class materials; do personal tasks or errands; act as a go-between with the student and the instructor.
