LCC Answers Need for Fitness Professionals through New Curriculum
August 1, 2013
LANSING, Mich. - Lansing Community College will be offering students the chance to exercise their employment options through a new curriculum that can meet the increased demand for knowledgeable, certified fitness professionals.
Beginning fall 2013, LCC's Physical Fitness and Wellness area will offer new programs that lead to certifications as a group fitness instructor and personal trainer. The new curriculum, LCC faculty say, is designed to be "stackable"—meaning that students can earn individual certificates that enhance job skills and employability as a professional fitness leader while building toward an associate degree in a high-demand field.
"People today are being strongly encouraged to take personal responsibility for their own health and well-being," says Amy Stoakes, PFW program director. "That means many individuals will be turning to fitness professionals for exercise plans and strategies that meet their goals."
Stoakes says that local and statewide public health initiatives working to combat the health crisis of physical inactivity and obesity will drive the demand for fitness trainers and instructors. The Michigan Department of Energy, Labor and Economic Growth projects a 25 percent increase in the employment for fitness trainers and aerobic instructors from 2008-2018.
The new LCC programs arm students with the comprehensive knowledge of exercise science, physiology and fitness leadership they need to pass national certification exams. Once certified, professional fitness trainers and instructors can work in a variety of settings and apply specific exercise guidelines to a range of clients.
"The health of our nation has become a major topic for reform because of the increasing prevalence of chronic diseases associated with obesity," says Stoakes. "Our programs and graduating professionals can help support that reform."
