Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a video production - who do I talk to - how do I start?
-
Just call our Intake Coordinator, Andra
Price, at (517) 483-1688 with all video production questions, ideas
or requests.
How much will this cost and how do we pay for this?
-
Media Services serves the entire college.
We do not work on a chargeback basis, however there might be
fees you would have to cover for certain special services
(professional on-camera talent, voice-over narration, etc.).
What format do you provide?
-
We offer DVD, CD, videotape, audio, and
various options for online platforms. We will suggest the
most appropriate format based on the purpose of your project and
the results you desire.
Do you produce every video project that people request?
- Video production is time-intensive (just look at the credits of a television show!), and we receive more requests than we have capacity. We explore two things with you:
-
What results do you want to achieve?
Sometimes a video is a great tool, but other times it may not be the right product for your result.
-
What is the return on investment?
This may involve criteria such as number of students served or type of results desired.
How long does it take to produce a video?
-
Our ability to meet a proposed deadline
will depend on projects we have in progress and the complexity
of your request. We can agree on a timeline before
starting any project.
I don't know exactly how to put a video project together...
- Our video production staff will
help with every phase of your project: writing, creative
treatment, scheduling, audio recording, graphics, studio and
field videotaping, editing...whatever is needed. But
remember, you are a key to the success of any project, and your
time investment and commitment is essential.
How do I get several copies for distribution?
-
We keep the master of your program in our
video library and give you two copies of your program. If
you need multiple copies, Media Services can provide VHS, CD,
DVD duplication for a small fee per copy.
I have my own video that I've shot along the way in past classes. Can we incorporate this into a more structured program?
- It is possible, but more often than
not it is difficult to get the product you want by trying to use
preexisting resources. Ideally a script is developed for a
project and it is the roadmap showing us exactly what has to be
done to turn script into final product.

I'd like to incorporate some shots that a local channel took...
I have a video I bought and would like to use one little part of it...
I would like to use this music as background...
I taped a speech and would like to use pieces of it...
Using preexisting resources
that do not belong to you or to LCC requires getting copyright
permissions. This can be a lengthy process and permission is
often refused. Again, most often we find that creating all
necessary video and audio is the best route to go.
I would like to incorporate a video into a PowerPoint slide. How would I do that?
- Directions on how to incorporate a
video into a PowerPoint slide can be found by
clicking here.
Do you have people that can do a narration?
- For on-camera appearance or
voice-only narration we use both LCC and non-LCC professionals
(the latter usually require a fee).
How long should my program be?
- Questions like this will be
answered by the assigned producer, working closely with you in
the development stage.
If we want video to be part of a marketing effort for our program, do we call Media Services or Marketing?
- For recruitment or other marketing
projects, call Marketing first. They will advise you as to
whether and how video (or other media as well) might be an
effective part of your overall marketing strategy. They
along with you would then include us in the deadline and design
decisions.
We are having a retirement party for our long-time department director. Can you video tape that for us as a gift to him?
- We can only accept projects that in some way, directly or indirectly, are part of instructional efforts at LCC.
