Converge and Derive Software

Converge and Derive are software packages used for solving mathematical problems.  Math classes that don’t require the use of Converge or Derive: MATH121, MATH122, MATH126, MATH130.  Instructors of these classes should feel free to use these programs to demonstrate topics taught in these classes.  They should inform the students that computers in the LSARC and the TLC Computer Center have Converge/Derive.

Students should definitely use Converge and Derive in MATH141 and MATH151 and in subsequent calculus courses.  They can purchase a manual from “The Hole in the Hall” in the Gannon Building, Room 133.  Instructors should demonstrate the uses of Converge and Derive when they teach various concepts.  These programs are a great aid to the visual learner.  Students should be assigned problems from the manual or other problems the instructor has created.  These problems should be part of the course grade.

Students who have not had Converge or Derive because they transfer to LCC and place into MATH152 or higher, should purchase a manual from “The Hole in the Hall”.  They should work through the manual and can use the computers in the LSARC and the TLC Computer Center.  They will be expected to be able to AUTHOR expressions/functions, and perform various operations on them such as graphing, taking the derivative, integrating, and solving.  Students should be able to graph in rectangular and polar mode.
