Is The Math Lab Right For You?

 Do you. . .

  • Do well with math and want to accelerate your course?
  • Struggle with math or dislike math?
  • Benefit from individual instruction?
  • Need flexibility in your studies because of work, family, or travel obligations?

Are you able to. . .

  • Make good choices when it comes to doing your homework?
  • Ask for help when you need it?
  • Follow a schedule?

If this sounds like you, the LCC Math Lab is right for you!

I loved going to Math Lab.  I had been away from math for 28 years and knew nothing about graphing calculators.  I felt very intimidated at the thought of returning.  The very first week I found the instructors to be very helpful and extremely patient as I learned.  With encouragement from the instructors, I found myself drawn to the Math Lab to be challenged.  The ability to work ahead and then be free to take a couple days off to study for another class was wonderful!  I accomplished 107 and 112 in 1 ½ semesters.  It was a blessing to have such caring and compassionate teachers in my corner who cared deeply about my success.

What is the Math Lab?Classroom2009

The Math Lab is a flexible learning system that emphasizes individual instruction for Math 050, Math 107, and Math 112.  Instruction begins in our large, open classroom in A&S 309 as self-directed study:  students get their assignments in their course packet, read the textbook, and do their homework.  As soon as a question or difficulty arises, students simply raise their hands and an instructor comes to give individual instruction.  Students can get this help as often as needed.  Additional instruction is available at the Instructor Station, through DVDs, and interactive websites.

There is flexibility in attendance:

  • Attend any 4 hours per week out of the hours the lab is open—days, evenings, and Saturdays (Fall and Spring)
  • No limit to the number of additional hours you can attend and get instruction

 There is flexibility in testing:

  • Take tests when you are ready -
ahead of schedule or even a little behind
  • No time limits except closing time
  • Retake tests after focused instruction if a test is failed
  • Retake tests to raise the grade if a test is passed

There is flexibility in the pace:

  • Start the next course (Math 107 or 112) if a course is finished early
  • Finish two courses in the same semester and pay for only one
Service & Testing

While Math Lab courses are not “self-paced,” students have considerable flexibility in scheduling their required hours and the ability to work ahead.

In the Math Lab, many friendly and competent people answered all the questions I had. Some even went the extra mile to look up information to a question I had and explained very complex math on a level that I could understand. The instructors and math assistants have what I call a "teacher's heart". The level of helpfulness is wonderful and I have excelled in my math work.
Overall I am very happy with the Math Lab structure and would highly recommend that more students investigate it.
