Career Facts
Alternative Energy Engineering Technology Program

What is an alternative energy technologist?

Alternative energy technologists are responsible for the planning, specifications, installation and technical support of energy systems.  They provide direction as well as hands on installation of Alternative Energy system components.  The technologist in this area must have a broad knowledge of Alternative Energy Systems as well as building, electrical and plumbing codes.  They work with Photovoltaics (Solar Panels) which harvest the tremendous energy potential of the sun and convert it directly into Direct Current Power.  They work with electrical equipment that converts DC energy into grid connected AC power.  They work with Hydrogen and Methanol fuel cells that produce DC energy.  These technologists have the knowledge necessary to conduct feasibility studies for the kind and location of Alternative Energy systems.   Wind power, solar power both: active and passive, geothermal, biomass as well as unconventional and cogeneration systems are just a few of the things that are studied by the alternative energy technologist.

What types of skills are required?

The alternative energy technologist must have a good general knowledge of earth science, practical physics, general chemistry as well as practical electrical and pipe fitting expertise.   Strong design and communication skills are a must.  A commitment to life long learning that will be necessary as more and more alternative energy systems become mainstream components.

 Where are they employed?

Alternative Energy Technologists will find employment opportunities with public utilities, alternative energy systems manufacturers, architectural and engineering consultants, energy management companies, heating and cooling contractors, and specialty independent energy systems retailers.

What degrees and certificates does LCC offer?

LCC offers a Certificate of Achievement, Customer Energy Specialist, Certificate of Achievement, Stationary Energy Technology, and an Associate in Applied Science Degree, Alternative Energy Technology, and an Associate in Applied Science Degree, Customer Energy Specialist.

 What is the salary range?

With energy costs spiraling upward, and the eventual end of oil production for fuel, job growth and employment opportunities are likely to continue to improve.  The number of community college trained alternative energy technicians will be far fewer than the job openings, resulting in excellent employment opportunities.

Salary range is difficult to predict as growth in this area is unprecedented and there is very little historical data for this new industry.

Like any occupation, pay and advancement, are dependant on education, experience, location, and the price of fuel and energy costs, as well as the state of the economy.
