What is a Motion Picture Production Specialist?

A Motion Picture Production Specialist is an individual with extensive training in the equipment and technology used to create both celluloid (film) and electronic motion picture images.  Individuals working in this industry capture on film and videotape the materials needed for entertainment, educational, scientific, and national-level advertising programs.

What types of skills are required?

Individuals desiring to enter this professional industry must acquire extensive knowledge of motion picture and video imaging systems, fundamental concepts of photographic composition, a thorough knowledge of storytelling concepts such as program timing, rhythm and pacing.  Additionally, specialists skills include extensive knowledge of film/video based linear and non-linear editing systems, lighting techniques as it applies to the creation of motion picture images, sound recording, audio sweetening and audio mixing techniques.

Where are they employed?

Most Motion Picture Specialists are either self-employed or are members of a small production team that specializes in a narrowly focused aspect of motion picture program development.

What degrees are available?

Lansing Community College offers both an Associates in Applied Science Degree as well as a Certificate of Achievement in Motion Picture Production.

What is the average salary?

The average salary varies greatly dependent upon the skills, professional experience and geographic location of the Motion Picture Specialist.  In 2002, entry level positions in the Lansing market paid approximately $10.00 per hour.  An experienced professional working in a major Film production market can make anywhere from $50,000 to $70,000 per year.
