Link to an Article
in an LCC Library Research Database
|
What is a
PURL?
Many--but not
all--research database vendors allow subscribers to establish links to articles
within their databases. These links may persist over a long period of time. They
are called by various names: persistent links, durable links, persistent URLs or PURLs.
How do I
create a PURL in Angel?
The
directions for creating a PURL are slightly different for databases produced by
different vendors. Some vendors don’t allow users to create PURLS. The
directions below apply to articles from Gale databases such as General
OneFile.
-
Access a
library research database and display the text of the article to which you
want
to link.
-
Click on the
word "Bookmark" (upper left).
-
Highlight the
bookmark URL. Be sure to include the entire URL.
-
Press Control
- C.
-
Log in to your
Angel course.
-
Open the page
in your course where you want the article URL to appear.
-
Click on Add
Content.
-
Click on Link.
The following page opens:

-
Under Page
Settings, enter a title in the Title box; enter a subtitle in the Subtitle
box if
you wish.
-
Under Link
Settings, find the dropdown menu for Link Target and select New Window.
Important: The reason for doing this is that some library research database
links will
not open within Angel.
-
Place your
cursor in the "Link URL" box and press Control-V to paste the URL into
the
box.
-
If you are on
campus when creating this link, add the Envoy prefix to the beginning of
the
URL. The envoy prefix is
https://envoy.lcc.edu/login?url=
Note:
If you copy and paste
the article URL while you are on campus, you will need to add the Envoy
prefix to the URL. The link will not work off campus unless the prefix is
added. If you are off campus when you create the PURL, the Envoy prefix will
be added automatically.
13 . Click on Save.
