Interlibrary Loan Guidelines
Interlibrary Loan is a service that obtains from other libraries throughout the
United States materials such as books, journal articles and dissertations that
are not available in the LCC Library collection. Interlibrary Loan service can
also be used by distant learners/off-campus employees and students to request
materials which are in the LCC Library collection or those needed to be obtained
from other libraries.
Before submitting an ILL request, please use the LCC
Library Catalog to determine if LCC owns the
book or periodical article you need. Also, search for your book request
through
MeLCat.

How do I use the ILL service?
Before submitting an ILL request, please search the LCC Catalog and in
MeLCat to determine if LCC owns the
book or periodical article you need.
In order to request an item, you will need to complete and submit a request
form. An ILL request form
is available.
For distant learners or students/employees at off campus sites, choose
this
Off-CampusILL request form.
If you are in a FirstSearch database, you may also submit an online request for
interlibrary loan directly from the individual record. All forms go directly to
the Interlibrary Loan Coordinator and will be processed in the order that they
are received.
Who may use ILL service?
Lansing Community College students who are currently enrolled (including
those enrolled in LCC off-campus or distant learning courses), faculty,
employees, students of institutions who have contracted with LCC, retirees, and
alumni of the College may use ILL service.
What can be requested?
Most books, government documents, dissertations, and journal articles can be
requested through Interlibrary Loan. Dissertations that are unavailable through
ILL can be purchased by the requestor from University Microfilms International
(UMI).
How many items may be requested? At what cost?
LCC students, retirees, and alumni may request up to 8 items (journal articles
and books) at a given time.
Faculty and employees may request up to 12 items at a given time.
Anyone eligible for ILL service may exceed the limit allowed providing they
are willing to accept a cost that could be charged by the lending library.
How long does it take to receive requests?
Allow at least two weeks for a request, however, many requests arrive within a
week to 10 days. Please budget your time and allow enough time for materials to
arrive.
Are there any items I can't order?
The following items cannot be requested:
Videos, film, CD's, sound recordings, computer software
Entire issues of journals
Textbooks for classes
Fiction, historical fiction and/or popular books such as those on the "Best
Seller" list
Items which are placed on reserve in our library
Reference books
Items owned by LCC's Library
Many of these items are available through MeLCat.
How will I be notified when my order comes in?
You can indicate your preference on the request form. Otherwise, you will
be notified via your LCC email.
Where do I pick up my requests? Where do I return them?
Photocopies of articles or a chapter in a book (non-returnable items) will be
held for ten days at the Library Checkout Desk. You may also request that
they be mailed to you. Please be aware that you will be fined $5 if you
do not either claim your item or make arrangements with the ILL office within
one week of the item being received. Returnable items such as
books requested by students, employees, retirees or alumni need to be picked up
at the Library Checkout Desk. For students and
employees who are taking courses off-campus, non-returnable items
(articles) can be mailed to a home address.
Students and faculty at the Star Institute, Livingston Center (Howell), or
Wilson Center (St. Johns) will have courier service to deliver returnable items
to them. When it is time to return the items, the same courier service will be
used to get the materials back to the LCC Library.
Users who have ILL materials to return and who are on campus need to put
the loaned material(s) in a book return drop box (outside of the TLC building or
on the 2nd floor in the Library), or give the loaned material(s) to staff at the
Checkout Desk.
How long may I keep the materials?
Items that need to be returned have a due date on them that is determined by the
lending library. It is the responsibility of the LCC user to comply with the
lending library's loan period.
May I renew ILL requests?
Yes, however, the lending library may deny a renewal request. If the lending
library chooses not to renew an item, you must return it by its due date.
Renewals must be requested at least three days before the due date by phoning
the ILL office at 517-483-1665* or by email to
martia16@lcc.edu.
* You may also call toll free. Dial 1-800-644-4522 and wait for an attendant.
Then ask to be connected to extension 1665. Please note that this toll-free
service is only available M - Th 8 a.m. - 6 p.m., Fri 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.,
and Sat 8:30 a.m. - 12:30 a.m. Eastern Standard Time.
What about overdue or lost items?
Overdue fees charged by the lending library will be passed on to the LCC user.
Difficulty in retrieving overdue ILL items from the borrower will result in an
immediate suspension of interlibrary loan service privileges, suspension of
borrowing LCC Library materials, and a hold will be placed on the student's
academic record. LCC users are responsible for all replacement fees, as quoted
by the lending library, for lost or damaged interlibrary loan items.
