Selection Guidelines

The Lansing Community College Library's Internet Bookmarks are created and maintained for library patrons to easily and quickly access
high-quality
websites.

Following is a series of concise guidelines that will help you decide if a website is appropriate for LCC Library's Internet Bookmark Collection.

To suggest a website that you feel should be included in the LCC Library Bookmarks, please complete the Internet Bookmark Request Form .

SCOPE:

  • Does the website fit in with the range of courses and degrees offered at LCC? There are increasing numbers of internet bookmark collections available - what makes our collection unique is that it is being developed especially with the needs of the LCC students in mind.

  • The LCC collection emphasizes the cultural diversity and adult interests of the Lansing area community - does the website aid in this process?

  • Does the website highlight a local resource? To avoid reinventing the website collection wheel, LCC Library's Internet Bookmark Collection emphasizes local resources, but also includes a few of the very best global websites and so offers  a unique, concise collection to meet the needs of the LCC Community.

  • LCC aims to promote critical and creative thinking - does the website foster this kind of learning?

  • The LCC Library collection focuses on current materials at a general or introductory college level - does the website fit into this scheme?

DISABILITY ACCESS:

  • Is the website designed to be fully accessible to the physically challenged? If so, the website should incorporate many or all of the following features:

  • A low-tech or text only version should be clearly available.

  • The home page should provide access information for people with disabilities.

  • All graphics should have an 'alt tag' which includes a short description of the image.

  • All audio or video clips should have text transcriptions or descriptions.

  • Alternative communication should be provided in place of online forms such as email or telephone numbers.

TECHNICAL ACCESS:

  • Is the website accessible to the technically challenged or does it require top-end hardware and software or the download of special software? If the website is high-tech, there should be a text-only or low-tech option available.

  • Is the website quick to appear on your computer or do parts of the website take an excessively long time to load?

  • Is it usually easy to reach, or is it overloaded and busy frequently?

  • Is it a freely available open website, or do parts require fees?

DESIGN:

  • Is the website well-organized - can you find your way around the website easily and find what you're looking for?

  • Are the individual web pages an appropriate length (not too short so that it's a waste of time to visit them, but not too long so that you have to scroll forever)?

  • Does it look and feel friendly?

  • Do visual effects enhance the resource or do they instead just distract from the content?

  • Are all hyperlinks current and working?

CONTENT:

  • Is the purpose of the website clearly stated and does the information and activities on the website support this purpose?

  • Is the website content accurate and well-written?

  • Is the information factual, or opinion? (If opinion, this should be honestly stated.)

  • Does the website contain original information, or simply links?

  • Are the headings clear and descriptive, or do they use jargon?

  • Is the information in the resource limited to certain time periods?

  • Is the information supportive of the LCC college curriculum?

ACCURACY, CURRENCY, and AUTHORITY:

  • Is the source of the content documented? Is it verifiable? Is it accurate?

  • How frequently is the information updated?

  • Does the website appear to have a commitment to ongoing maintenance and stability?

  • Is the website sponsored by some reputable organization or expert?

  • Is there someone responsible for the website whom you can easily contact by email, traditional mail or telephone?

Please note that the above points are guidelines only! Most likely no website will match the entire list, but if a website incorporates several of these suggestions, chances are it is a high quality site and worthy of inclusion in LCC Library's Internet Bookmark Collection.

We appreciate and will consider all suggested websites, but the final decision of inclusion of a website rests with the LCC Librarians.
