Learn the Net:

Bare Bones 101:
A basic tutorial on Searching the Web created by Ellen Chamberlain, Head Librarian at the University of South Carolina.

Entering the World-Wide Web: A Guide to Cyberspace:
A classic source of Internet information from 1993. Very clear and easy to understand, its descriptions of the workings of the Internet, World-Wide Web and Mosaic (the world's first browser), are still valid even today.

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly:
or Why It's a Good Idea to Evaluate Web Sources

An excellent & clear guide to website evaluation.  Also have a look at Suggestions for Successful Internet Assignments on the same website.  A valuable resource for both students and instructors!

Learn the Net
Absolutely extensive. Covers topics ranging from E-business to E-mail - in five languages! This San Francisco based Web site has been deservedly rated in the top 100 by Yahoo Internet Life for providing comprehensive and user-friendly online Internet training.

SearchEngine Guide
A fair bit more advertisement-laden than Search Engine Watch (see below), but does provide interesting up-to-date articles about Internet searching technology & politics.

SearchEngine Watch
Everything you always wanted to know about search engines and much more. Includes web searching tips, search engine listings, reviews, ratings, tests, news, and tips on how to submit your web page to search engines.

Internet.com
THE online Internet magazine - very current information for the searcher who wants to be at the cutting edge.

Zen and the Art of the Internet
Another classic source and every bit as enlightening as its namesake.

Web Design:

HTML Goodies
An excellent online tutorial in web site creation for absolute beginners. Includes tutorials on other aspects of web site design such as tables, backgrounds, forms, frames, image maps, images, colors, buttons, etc.

Killersites.com
This site takes you beyond the basics of web site design by looking at artistic composition, graphic metaphors, as well as offering many tips about how to reduce bandwidth while still preserving style and function.

Web Developer's Virtual Library
Online tutorials, graphics, discussion forums, job listings for everything from basic web page design to hard core Java programming. This site is well-organized and well maintained.

Web Diner Inc.
Another excellent online introduction to web site design. This web site has a casual and encouraging tone to its tutorial and also provides information about how to find free web space, how to upload your site, how to get free graphics and lots more.

WebMonkey: The Web Developer's Resource
An offshoot of HotWired, this site offers slightly irreverent information and tutorials on website authoring, design, multimedia, programming and electronic commerce.

Writing for the Web (Sun Microsystems)
Described as a 'cookbook for helping people create better web pages', this guide is a classic source for advice about how to create a web site that is functional and user friendly.
