A Short History of the Library Locations at Lansing Community College

1950's

The college library began as one room in Old Central building and then expanded to two rooms. Overflow material went into closets.

1960's

1966: The Old Central location opened in Old Central building. The name "Old Central" comes from Lansing Central High School, this building being the site of Lansing's first high school. The library occupied the former gymnasium of the school.

1968: The Arts and Sciences location opened in Arts and Sciences building. The collection was divided between the two locations. In general, Arts and Sciences contained literature, science, mathematics, health careers and the social sciences. Old Central contained business, law and technical information.

1970's

A small Vocational - Technical location opened in the Gannon Vocational - Technical building. The library was now divided into three locations. The Vocational - Technical location contained technical material. Arts and Sciences contained literature, science, mathematics, health careers and social science. Old Central contained business and law.

1980's

The Vocational - Technical location closed. The library reverted to two locations, Arts and Sciences and Old Central. Technical material moved to the Arts and Sciences location.

1990's

1991: A new Gannon Vocational - Technical location opened in Gannon Vocational - Technical building.

1991-1998: The library was once again divided into three locations. The Arts and Sciences contained literature, science, mathematics, and the social sciences. Gannon Vocational - Technical contained technical, health and career information. Old Central contained
business and law.

1998: The era of divided locations ended as the entire library moved to a new facility, the Technology and Learning Center, located on the South-West corner of the campus. This consolidated the collection, expanded the library from 35,000 to 43,000 square feet, and made use of new technology to deliver quality library service in the new millennium.
