 Post Graduation Teacher Certification

If you already have a bachelors degree and want to teach -

HOW DO I GET IT?
To earn Michigan teacher certification you must apply to an approved four-year college or university teacher preparation program. Lansing Community College can provide prerequisite courses for transfer to a four-year certification program, but it cannot grant teacher certification.

WHAT DO I NEED? To become certified to teach you must complete:

  • professional education courses (at least 18 credits plus an internship)

  • a teachable major (min.30 cr.) and/or minor(s) (min.20 cr.)

  • all parts of the Michigan Test for Teacher Certification (MTTC)

WHAT IS A TEACHABLE MAJOR/MINOR?
You must have an academic major/minor in a subject normally taught in K-12. Typical Elementary major/minors are: mathematics, integrated science, language arts, and social studies. Typical secondary majors include: mathematics, biology, chemistry, physics, English, history, government, physical education, foreign languages, computer science, business, and industrial technology. Available majors and minors are posted on university websites in their College of Education or department of the subject matter, e.g. English Department, Spanish Department, etc.

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE?
If you have already earned a bachelors degree, you may be eligible for a graduate or post-bac program, or you may be required to complete a second bachelor’s degree.

IF you have a teachable major. you do not have a teachable major.
THEN You should explore POST BAC options. You may need a second bachelor's degree in Elementary or Secondary Education.
TO GET STARTED 1. Identify a university post-bac program that interests you. See the web addresses below for some suggestions.
2. Meet with an advisor at the university you have selected to determine remaining requirements for certification.
3. Check with an LCC advisor to see which courses, if any, may be taken at LCC.
1. Download the LCC Student Guide to Teacher Certification (pdf) for complete information about requirements, academic programs and resources available at LCC.
2. Speak to an Education advisor to help identify the best program for you.
3. Submit your official university transcripts to LCC Enrollment Services for review. Be sure to indicate the curriculum code number of the transfer program you have chosen.
Note: If your credits are from out of state, please provide course descriptions.
Length of Program Post-Bac programs vary from three to six semesters including at least one semester of full-time student teaching. Some of these programs lead to a master’s degree. A second bachelors degree could take three to four years to complete including student teaching, depending on how many of your degree credits apply.

NOT SURE?
These LCC courses are designed for exploration of teaching as a career:

  • Shop around. Not all schools offer the same type of program.
  • Talk to an advisor. Find out what options are available for post-bac students that might not be listed on the website, such as scholarships and accelerated programs.
